Prologue:
I race over the grass, too fast for it to catch fire. I zig-zag through the dense trees, trying to lose them, knowing I’m leaving a trail of scorch-marks. Faster. Faster. Faster. I chant in my mind, willing myself to obey. Faster. Faster. Fas-STOP!
I screech to a halt. I almost fell into the stream. The brook. My heart aches. Knowing it’s pointless, I listen for my pursuers. They could literally be on top of me and I wouldn’t know. On a whim, I veer off to the right, faster than ever. I just wish I was fast enough.
