Beautiful Nightmare

I shut the door quietly, mostly out of habit more than thinking I would disturb Adelaide. Despite my careful tactics she still poked her head around the corner that lead to the living room and smiled at me.

I think at one point in time people would have called her beautiful. She had long blonde hair that curled naturally, paired with brown eyes. Her eyes were on steroids or something though, because the brown was ringed with gold and amber.. But not just in the sunlight, all the time.

It was like her eyes were a constant mini sunset.

The thing that turned mostly people away was the burn marks that covered most of the left half of her face. Even being turned into a vampire couldn't fix the kind of scarring that she'd been given.

"Hello Sang, how was your evening?"

I smiled and kicked off my shoes by the door, "Oh you know, the usual. How was yours?"

She laughed and walked back into the living room without replying to the question, "I've been waiting for you to start the new episode!"

I grinned and ran over to the living room to fall down into my seat. She winked at me and pressed play. The next hour or so was filled with girls walking out of limos and greeting a man. Adelaide and I took bets on who would stick around til the finale. By the end of the episode I had my little team of five girls and she had hers.

We only had one in common, oddly enough.

Adelaide sighed and flipped over to Netflix when the Bachelor had ended, "I wish I were able to go on a show like that," she rolled over on her stomach and looked at me dreamily, "but I'd be the bachelorette, and all of my bachelor choices would be vampires like me. Good ones."

I twirled my hair around my finger while watching her choose a show, "I don't know. I think I'd end up having a hard time choosing just one."

She was quiet so long that I looked over at her, she was staring at the tv with a slight frown, "Sang your heart is so big. I have no doubt you'd have a hard time choosing in that situation. Which is why I'm so thankful I broke into your house when I did, and am able to recognize a pure soul when I see one."

I nodded quietly, "Yeah," the world fell flat.

I didn't like to talk about it, any of it. The drama I left behind on Sunnyvale court was something I didn't like to unearth, something I couldn't bear to think of. The memories were too hard, and the knowledge that had Adelaide not saved me from the hell hole I'd have probably died didn't settle my nerves very much.

I waited until the show was well underway before telling her I was tired. She barely looked up from her show. She didn't sleep, and as long as she didn't go more than a week without being fed she was in a good mood.

In my bedroom I started shedding off the clothes that were still damp. I took a hot shower in the private bathroom and then pulled on pajamas before dragging my laptop off my desk and onto my bed. I spent the remainder of the night looking at reports, anything interesting in the eyes of a Hunter.

After finding several big looking cases that were well enough away I slid the laptop onto the floor. I was too warm under the blankets to get up and actually put it away. I turned to my phone and played some games until my mind was numb enough to sleep.

The next morning I woke up to the smell of burnt french toast. Adelaide was singing an off key song in the kitchen, and I knew that if I didn't get out of bed soon she'd be trying to burn down the house.

I rolled over and pressed my face into the soft pillow, breathing slowly in an attempt to go back to sleep.

"Sang, dear! I can hear you breathing get up get up!"

I groaned good naturedly and slipped out of bed. After pulling on some clothes and slipping my hair into a ponytail I made my way out to where she stood in the kitchen. She whirled around and grinned at me, the left half of her face crinkled a bit, making her look sinister as her sharp teeth poked out from between her lips.

"I made you breakfast!"

"I can smell that," I said dully.

She made a face at me, "Well if you think you can do better I made sure to only burn one thing and save the rest for you!" She winked and stepped away from the stove to the ipod dock on the cabinet.

I watched in amusement as she turned it up so that it was no longer background music. As I busied myself with the french toast she excused herself and went outside.

When I'd finished making myself some food I flipped off the stove and sat down at the table to eat it. I was the only one who'd ever actually eaten at the table. Adelaide liked to take her meals into the shed out back, which suited me just fine. Less of a mess.
