Dancing with a Ghost

In this faded silence, cool of night
We dance sweetly
Under the warm white lights.
Like ten dozen fairies, all holding hands
Along a tender string
Twinkling softly, while we dance.
Our fingers laced together,
Nose pressed to my cheek
Your hot breath folds over me
And evanescently I weep.
You ask me, sweet one, why I'm crying so,
And I stare into your panicked eyes
And tell you I don't know.
Then a smile lifts your handsome face
And you brush my tears away,
You've run away to the clouds again
You gaze at me and say.
Illuminated by the light you give
So beautiful in your eyes,
Of gentle turquoise and drifting blue
And it reaches me why I've cried.
For though in this dance, our love is encased
In your strength and gentle arms,
There is something raptured and incomplete
In this wandering sense of calm.
I hold you tight, with all my strength
Like I might never let you go,
Yet in my heart, my mind my soul
I know I'm only dancing, with a ghost.
