"Amelia Marie Hale, what are you doing?"
I looked over Steven's shoulder and looked at the source of the voice.
My mother, Jessica, stood there, her blonde hair in an updo as she glared at me with judgemental eyes. Henry, my father, had a more confused and sympathetic look, staring straight at Steven. And of course, Dawn and Lucas were right behind them, smugish looks on their faces as if they had won something.
"Mother, father" I said, walking over to them "What are you doing here?"
"We came to see Elizabeth" My mother said, her voice icy cold "And we got a little surprise. Well, it;s nice to see you can move on quickly after your fiancee died"
"I, well, that's not exactly true, mother" I explained "I mean, I didn't just move on I... Gabriel and I broke up a few months ago" I told her, giving a small smile "I would have thought Lucas or Dawn told you, but, I guess not"
"No, and neither did you" She said harshly and finally met my father's gaze to Steven "You. You're that singer, aren't you? I saw you at the funeral" She said, walking towards him "Why?"
Steven glanced over at my mother and gave her a warm smile "I was there for moral support for Amy" He explained "And then she asked me to bring her here so she could see Lizzie."
"How do you know my daughter, exactly?" My mother interrogated
"We've been together for a few months now" Steven said, still smiling, the warmth of his personality battling my mother's frozen demoner.
"Have you now?" She said, pursing her lips
"Yes, mother" I jumped in, jumping in between her and Steven to act as a physical barrier to their possible verbal altercation "We have, and we're happy"
"Amelia, it's rude to interrupt other's conversations. Please darling, wait over there while I speak to Mr..." She trailed off, waiting for Steven to answer.
"You can call me Steven"
"I'd rather not" My mother quipped and moved a piece of long hair behind her ear
"Mother" I said in a desperate tone "Please, don't cause a scene, not here"
My mother looked at me before raising her chin up "Fine. Amelia, if you will, why don't you go to the gift store with your father, and... Steven and I will take a walk outside" She demanded in a stern tone, one I knew usually meant that there would be no other answer but compliance.
"No" I said in protest "I will not. I'd rather you'd say what you need to say, calmly, and we'd go our own ways." I said, turning around to stand next to Steven, who wrapped an arm around me and grinned. I smiled back and faced my parents.
"Fine." Mother said and looked back at my father, who looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here, and back at us "I think with the recent events, it's best if you stay away from the family. Afterall, Gabriel was like a son to us." She said tersely "And you are our daughter, before you protest, but right now it's just best"
I looked at her confused "I don't understand, are you disowning me or something?"
"Not long term, just for now"
I blinked and looked at my father "Father, your wife is being ridicolous"
"Amelia"
"You are!"
"It's not like we're completely disowning you finacially, but I'd personally feel more comfortable if you'd leave us alone while we mourn."
"Mother, you're doing that thing where you make no sense whatsoever"
"Amelia" My father said in a softer tone "It's not a big deal sweetheart. Really, you're mother just needs her space" He whispered "Don't worry, I'll let her know she's being a bit unfair"
I sighed and rolled my eyes "FIne, thank you. Goodbye, daddy" I said and hugged him tightly "Mother, Lucas, Dawn, I'll see you around" I shrugged and walked away.
"Your mother is a bit odd" Steven noted as he followed me
"I know, I'm not sure where that came from" I shrugged again "But it's whatever"
