Chapter Four:

Cassidy and Lola went to the nurse’s office to grab a bandage and saw Claire sitting in the office with a couple police officers.  They exchanged scared looks and hurried back to their homerooms.  The teacher wasn’t there so Cassidy texted Cale with the news, and he responded back immediately.  Simply: Call me.

Cassidy glanced around before calling her brother.  Several other students were on their phones and she felt out of place among the mourners, especially in her pink sweater and jeans.  She felt as if she should be wearing black and sobbing.

“Cassidy are you serious?” Was the first thing Cale said.

“Dead serious,” Cassidy said before realising her mistake and getting a glare from Danielle.  “They have police officers and counselors and everyone’s all upset.”

“So ask to come home.  We’ll start together next week,” Cale said.

“I can’t,” Cassidy said.  “Somebody already asked to send me home, and the teacher stood up for me.  If I go home for the rest of the week, I’m just letting her win and get her way.”

Cale sighed, “Cassidy, just this once, can you please let someone else win?”

Cassidy sighed.  “No, Cale.  I can’t.  I let Marnie and Jonas win and I’m not letting people walk all over me here.  This is my fresh start.”

“Cassidy, when are you going to get over Marnie and Jonas?” Cale asked.

“Never,” Cassidy said.  “Or until I finally feel like being the bigger person and accepting their apologies.  Wait, they never apologized.”

“Cassidy,” Cale said.  “I get the whole fresh start thing, but seriously.  The guy was a jerk.  Marnie treated you like dirt.  If you’re not coming home, I’ll probably be there at lunch anyway, so be careful and keep a low profile until I get there.”

Cassidy nodded.  “Fine, Cale,” She said before hanging up.  She was thrilled that Cale was coming, but that she had to wait three more hours wasn’t exactly a happy thought.

  “Who was that?” Lola asked.

“My brother,” Cassidy explained.  “He’s feeling better and is coming at lunch.”

  “Is he older?” Lola asked.

  “Yep,” Cassidy nodded.

  “How much older?”

“He’s in our grade,” Cassidy said.

Lola pouted for a second.  “Did he get held back?” She asked.

“No,” Cassidy shook her head.  “He’s eleven months older than me.  He’s fifteen and I’m fifteen in a couple weeks.”

“Oh,” Lola said.  “Is he a bad boy?” She asked.

Cassidy shook her head.  “He’s really protective.  He gets into fights to protect me but doesn’t start fights.  He’s amazing at football too,” Cassidy said, thinking back to the fond day when her brother had beaten the shit out of Jonas.

“Do you have any pictures of him?” Lola asked, pointing to Cassidy’s phone.

Cassidy shook her head.  “I just got this phone a couple days ago.”

“Wow,” Lola said sniffling and wiping away fake tears.  “What kind of friend are you?  You don’t have any pictures of your older brother to show your friend so she can tell you whether or not he’s hot.”

Cassidy hit Lola.  “Stop it,” She said.  Lola giggled.  “And seriously, please do not start crushing on Cale that would be so creepy!”

“Fine,” Lola pouted.  “You’re no fun.”

“Too bad, you’re officially stuck with me,” Cassidy said before the two dissolved into giggles.

“Girls!” The teacher was standing at the front looking shocked.  “We are in a time of mourning.  What is so funny?”

  “Sorry,” Lola said.

“Does anyone in here want a counselor?” A woman poked her head into the room.  Danielle the girl who was rude and what looked like a few of her friends put their hands up.  “Alright, I’ll take the first girl and send someone back for the rest.”  The woman motioned to Danielle who stood up and sniffled, wiping her eyes on a new tissue.

“There’s a few more in here,” The woman said after leaving and three other people came and took the remaining students.

“Ms. Edwards can we play silent ball?” One of the guys at the front asked.  Ms. Edwards looked offended but she nodded.

Cassidy and Lola dragged chairs closer to everyone else and climbed onto them.  The game started and it was quiet at first.  “Lola,” Cassidy whispered holding her hands up and waiting for Lola to pass her the ball.

“You’re out!” Screamed one of the guys.

Cassidy sat down and pointed an accusing finger at him.  “So are you,” She said.

The guy swore and sat down.  “Let’s make it Resurrection,” He said to the remaining players.  Everyone agreed and Cassidy was in again after Lola purposely fumbled.

  “Thanks,” Cassidy mouthed.

  Lola smiled.
