Chapter Five:

The morning passed mostly like that.  The majority of her homeroom, whom she found out were sharing most of the same classes because they only really switched teachers, were perfectly fine.  The news of Alexandria was stunning, but only the girls who were really close or suck-ups were bawling their eyes out.  The guys were mostly afraid of the crying girls so they played silent ball and other games.  Cassidy hung out with the guys and Lola, who really wasn’t that affected.

When lunchtime rolled around just before the class was dismissed somebody knocked at the door.  Cassidy could see a tall, muscular and broad-shouldered football-player physique and dark blonde hair and she knew it was her brother.

“Hello,” Ms. Edwards said when she opened the door to see Cale standing there with a grim smile on his face.

“Hi, I’m Cale Reynolds, I’m new,” Cale said.

Ms. Edwards looked at Cassidy for a moment.  “Oh, I was told the Reynolds’ were in separate grades.”

“No, ma’am,” Cale said.  He stepped into the room and closed the door.  “I’m only eleven months older than Cass,” He added.

Beside Cassidy, Lola was pinching her arm with wide eyes.  “Your brother is so hot,” She said.

Cassidy shivered.  It was true, however.  The whole class was back and even Danielle was staring with appreciation at Cale.  Cassidy knew Cale didn’t want a girlfriend yet, though.

“You can sit down beside your sister or beside Nathan,” Ms. Edwards said.

Cale flashed Ms. Edwards a smile and made his way towards his sister.  He ruffled her hair and pulled her into a one-armed hug.  “Are you holding up?” He asked.

“I’m fine,” Cassidy said.  “It’s mostly just awkward,” She added.

Cale gave her a duh! look.  “Obviously, Cass,” he said.  “I think the plane’s high altitude took some of your brain cells, you’re acting very blonde.” He poked a lock of hair playfully.  “Anyway, of course it’s awkward, a star student and suck-up just died.”

“Hey,” Cassidy said.  “The plane did nothing to my blondeness,” She said.

Cale shrugged.  “That’s a matter of opinions,” He said.

Cassidy glared at him until she felt an elbow in her ribs.  She switched her glare over to Lola.  “Ouch,” Cassidy whined, purposely stalling to make Lola mad.

Lola raised her elbow again threateningly and Cassidy sighed.  “Cale, this is Lola.  Lola this is my older brother Cale.”

Lola smiled at Cale.  “Hi,” She said flipping her hair over her shoulder in such an obvious flirting move that Cassidy groaned and pretended to barf.

Cale raised an eyebrow at Cassidy and then started flirting back with Lola.  Cassidy had a look of absolute terror and disgust on her face.  Lola’s flirty giggles scared her and she jumped up and ran across the room.

Ms. Edwards didn’t notice because she was busy talking to a couple police officers.  Cassidy glanced at the clock and saw that they should have been dismissed already, but because the officers were there Ms. Edwards was distracted.

Cassidy gave a quick glance towards her brother and Lola and then shut her eyes just as fast.  Lola was practically sitting on Cale, who was smirking at Cassidy.

Cassidy quickly resolved to try and keep her brother as far away from Lola as possible.  Starting after lunch.  Forcing her eyes to stay on the door Cassidy made her way towards Ms. Edwards.

“’Scuse me,” She said softly.  “Ms. Edwards, can we go for lunch?” She asked.

Ms. Edwards looked at the clock and gave a startled breathless gasp.  “Yes, everyone go,” She said, raising her voice so that she was heard.

“Just a moment, Patricia,” One of the officers said.  He was a dark-skinned man with a shiny bald head and a large frame.  He was over six feet tall and Cassidy had to twist her neck awkwardly so she could look at him.

“Hmm?” Ms. Edwards asked in a distracted way.  Cassidy noticed her playing with the charm bracelet around her wrist, making the silver charms jingle.  Cassidy followed her gaze to the other officer.  She smiled slightly as she watched Ms. Edwards make googly eyes.

He was tall like his partner.  He had tanned skin and short dark hair.  He had a serious air about him but his eyes were twinkling.  Cassidy stifled a laugh when she realized he was staring at Ms. Edwards.

As Cassidy and the other officer watched, Ms. Edwards stopped fiddling with her charm bracelet and wound her finger around a piece of her auburn hair.  Cassidy giggled and the dark-skinned officer looked at her.

Cassidy clamped a hand over her mouth and the officer chuckled silently.

“Patricia,” The officer said, breaking Ms. Edwards and his partner’s silent flirting.  “We need to talk to some of the students.”

Ms. Edwards nodded, looking flustered.  She seemed to come to her senses and realize what had happened that morning.  She nodded.  “Alexandria’s closest friends all went away for counseling.  I suppose you could start with some of the boys.” Ms. Edwards stepped aside to let them watch the kids finally escape through the door.

The officer Ms. Edwards had been flirting with looked all the kids over.  His gaze landed above Cassidy’s head.

Cassidy turned quickly to see who he was talking about.  There was nobody there.  Even Cale and Lola had already left.

“She didn’t know Alexandria,” Ms. Edwards said, placing a hand on Cassidy’s arm.  “Questioning her would be pointless.”

The dark-skinned officer looked at his partner.  “Clyde, we can’t waste time.”

Officer Clyde shook his head stubbornly.  “She’s hiding something.  I can sense it.”

Cassidy gave him a funny look.  “Who’s hiding something?”

Officer Clyde looked at her.  “You.”
