Chapter Six:
Cassidy struggled pitifully against Officer Clyde’s iron-like grip. He had his hand wrapped around her arm and was practically dragging her outside to the station they had set up for interrogations and questioning.
“You can’t do that,” She said while he was dragging her across the lawn. Cassidy’s mind had given up denying that he was dragging her. Her feet were dangling uselessly against the ground.
“Clyde, let her go,” His partner tried to reason with him.
“Darrel,” Officer Clyde said, stopping and facing his partner. “I am questioning her, whether you like it or not. If you’re going to be questioning my authority then you can go work with someone else.”
Officer Darrel shrugged. “Fine,” He said and walked away.
Cassidy felt betrayed. Officer Clyde seemed satisfied, however, as he started dragging her across the grounds again.
“Why me?” Cassidy asked.
Officer Clyde ignored her.
Cassidy scowled. One of her biggest pet peeves was being ignored. She tried to focus her eyes on her sneakers. The few students who were outside enjoying the sun were giving her strange looks. Cassidy saw somebody come up to them.
“Excuse me, Sir,” Somebody said. Cassidy recognised the voice but she couldn’t place it. “Why are you dragging her around?”
“She’s being questioned,” Officer Clyde snapped.
“Why? I thought she was new?”
Officer Clyde stopped. Cassidy banged her toe on a rock that was sticking out of the ground and she sucked in a breath trying not to curse in front of the officer.
“Just because she’s new doesn’t mean she won’t know anything.” Officer Clyde snapped. Cassidy sensed his anger.
“Do you even know what Alexandria’s last name is?” The person asked, coming around to stand in front of her.
Cassidy saw that it was Henry, her rescuer from this morning. “I think somebody told me, but I don’t remember,” Cassidy said honestly. She looked at Henry and saw him smiling at her.
“She’s lying,” Officer Clyde snapped.
“No, I’m not,” Cassidy insisted.
Officer Clyde scowled at her. “You’re coming with me,” He grunted tugging on her arm. Cassidy felt her feet lift up before she was slammed into something hard.
She let out a groan when she crumpled to land on the ground. Officer Clyde was glaring at Henry who had stepped into their way. Henry held out a hand to Cassidy and she took it without hesitating. He pulled her up gently, tucking her neatly under his arm.
Cassidy felt smug at the position she was in. Her pulse was thumping faster than normal from such a close proximity to Henry.
Officer Clyde glared at her. “Fine.” He spat out, and Cassidy imagined him with fangs that were dripping saliva. “But if I hear you have anything to do with any of it, I’m arresting you,” He said. With that the officer turned and stalked away.
Cassidy watched him go and felt an urge to flip him off and stick out her tongue. She didn’t let herself however because Henry was still beside her, his warm arm over her shoulders.
“Stubborn,” Henry said, turning. He took Cassidy with him. “Are you hungry?” He asked. “You can tell me what happened over lunch.”
Cassidy nodded. “Thank you,” She said sounding childish.
Henry looked down at her. “No problem,” He said in surprise.
Cassidy grinned. Henry led her to the cafeteria, his arm around her the whole time. Cassidy was getting lots of looks from the girls, especially a group of petite blondes. Henry ignored them and steered her towards a table outside beneath a group of trees.
“Is this spot ok?” He asked Cassidy.
“It’s fine,” Cassidy said. She sat down and Henry sat down opposite her. He placed the two trays he had gotten in the cafeteria in front of them and Cassidy looked at the food.
A piece of pizza with what looked like onions on it was sitting in front of her. Cassidy picked it up, sniffed it, turned it over and then put it back down. Henry was watching her with a smile. “Is it edible?” She asked, gesturing to the pizza.
“All of it,” Henry said with a laugh.
“Seriously?” Cassidy asked with a giggle.
“Seriously,” Henry repeated. “The cafeteria ladies are great cooks.” He added with obvious appreciation. He took a bite of pasta and smiled dramatically.
Cassidy giggled and took a bite of the pizza. It was actually really good.
“So are you going to tell me what happened?” Henry asked, surprising her.
Cassidy shrugged. “It really wasn’t that exciting,” She said.
Henry raised his eyebrows. “It sure looked exciting. Everyone watched him drag you towards that makeshift interrogation chamber.”
“Ok, so it was exciting,” Cassidy said. “Basically I went up to my teacher and reminded her that it was lunch time. Officer Clyde decided that he wanted to ‘question me’” Cassidy said that part in exaggeration and added quotation marks with her fingers.
“‘Question you’?” Henry asked.
“Yes,” Cassidy nodded gravely. “I say it like that because the way my arm feels now, I thought he was trying to drag me across the country.”
Henry chuckled. “He seemed pretty determined.”
“Oh he was,” Cassidy said. “The teacher and I both told him I was new and I didn’t know anything but he didn’t believe me. Also his partner who was nice told him I was useless because I didn’t know Alexandria and then he left.”
“Tough,” Henry said.
Cassidy narrowed her eyes. “Are you making fun of me?” She asked.
Henry shook his head quickly.
“Smart idea, Smart,” Cassidy said with an evil grin.
