"Who do you think did it, L?" J asked, in case you hadn't noticed, they never spent time asking pointless questions such as: 'what was that?' Or: "what should we do?" L, opened his mouth to answer, but another explosion, closer this time interrupted him.

"I suggest that we take shelter, Watari, please bring a television." L was planning on watching the news for further events, "And sweets." He added, almost as an afterthought.

Of course, both of the children were panicking, and the flames in the distance were terrifying L, if you remember the fate of his family. I will tell you now, that L never did get over this, and will always flinch away from flames, no matter how small. As Watari was collecting the equipment (and sugar) that L requested, L was the one who was wheeling J, who was still unable to walk, to the safety room. The safety room was built of metre thick walls, with a ceiling of steel. It could withstand a bomb, if needed, and could be locked with about five locks and fingerprint scanners, so virtually impossible to break in from the outside. In my entire time at Wammy's, I used that room a grand total of once, when a man broke in with a gun. The point I am attempting to get across is that the room is hardly used, bomb proof and bulletproof. They were safe there.
----------
"Here is what we know so far, from the news: There have been three bombs in this area, and in various cities around the world, excepting that of America. What do you make of that?" L had been organising the information as best as he could, and was attempting to get in touch with the police, but given the current situation, as well as the fact that neither were well known yet, that would prove virtually impossible.
"Well, we cannot rule out a terrorist attack, but since the USA was not targeted, this seems more like a poorly orchestrated attempt at causing World War Three, which is just downright ridiculous." J would not be wrong about this, but in fact, the USA was included, but communications nationwide had been shut down.
"At the heart of the ridiculous, the sublime.." L muttered under his breath, the response almost involuntary.
"What?" J asked, but she knew what he was referring to: a poem based on an all-too-true event in which a man sacrificed himself so his friends would live, but the friends died anyway. A sad story to be put with the rest. In all the years that J knew L, she never understood what he meant by saying this at that point. Obviously, I do not either, as J is the one that told me the most about her past, and is the reason I am able to recount these events. Apparently she is unable to; it is too painful.

Within the hour, the one man in the US who was able to communicate had claimed responsibility for the crimes. The problem was, he was also the President.
"Watari, please call the police for me and J. We shall communicate through these computers and voice filters." Now would be the time that both would start to gain their reputation. Now was when the police would start to know their names. Well, their aliases, at that time, only Watari knew their true names (At some point, the two would exchange their surnames, but that is currently irrelevant.)

Within 15 minutes, the two had been able to establish a connection with the police. "Hello. We would help you with your current case. I am L." The metallic voice soon to became famous as that of L's rang out.
"And I am J. You currently have no reason to trust us, but we will share our thoughts with you. In the recent video broadcast by the President of the United States, we both have reason to believe that he is not behind this. His face appears calm, but notice how his eyes kept flicking to the side of him, like he was worried about whatever was there-"
"And also, notice the lack of a smile. If I were plotting to start WW3, I would probably start smiling if my plans turned out like this. So, can you trust us yet?"L had taken over from J, who was still theorising on the bomber's motive.
A fumbling, shocked reply from the other side of the computer soon reached L and J: "Uhm, Uh, yes, we can trust you. What other information have you been able to deduce so far?"

"Well, you may have noticed the lack of communication with the US, so obviously the person or persons orchestrating this does have a large amount of pull with the American government," the police officer on the other end of the line opened his mouth to try to talk, possibly to ask if it could be the President, "No, actually, it is more likely that they were just threatening the government. They probably want us to think that it is the President. They also have a large arsenal of weapons at their disposal. How do I know that? Simple, they were able to threaten the US government without being immediately arrested, that alone suggests that they were have some sort of blackmailing tool, probably a weapon. This is being pulled off by a group, due to the magnitude, and it is well thought out, probably being prepared for ages. Have we missed anything?" J smiled at the computer, it wasn't often that she got to show off. L then started to brief the police on what to do.

"I need you to try as soon as possible to re-establish contact with America, also, I will need a list of the places targeted so far. Include Washington. Just because we have no contact with America does not mean that we should assume that they are unharmed. Our current email should be being displayed along the bottom screen, please use that to send the locations to us. We will speak with you if we find other developments." And at that, he shut off the connection. At around the same time, a different computer displayed the message, which had a list of the places targeted, in the order that they happened.
Washington x ?
Winchester x 3
Tokyo x 5
Helsinki x 5
Rome x 3
Edinburgh. x 5

"WW THRE? World War Three? This probably does show that this is what the person wants to start, but still, it is a bit.." J paused, searching for the right word, "Open for interpretation." by this, she meant the lack of an E on three, WWTHRE can become WWTHREE, but still... Then it hit her.
"There will be another bombing. In a place beginning with E." This was the conclusion that she had drawn. Now was a question of timing. There were ten seconds between the first and second, 100 between for the second and third, 1000 between the third and fourth, and 10 000 between the fourth and fifth. After that it was random. Now that there has been some time for us to recover, it will probably go to the previous pattern again. "I believe it will happen in around 27 hours." 27 hours to find the insane person orchestrating this.
"J, I agree completely, but also, we need to remember something else. The amount of bombs placed could correlate to the places bombed. All are either 3 or 5. If we put that with the order of places, then we get:
Helsinki
Edinburgh
Edinburgh
Helsinki
Edinburgh

"HeeHe. They really are insane, aren't they, L? I take it that the next place to be bombed will either have 5 or 6 planted?"

"6 because the sixth location will also be an E? Ok then, 27 hours until the bombing. They want to start World War Three, so they probably...J? Please try to stay focused, this is possibly World War three." J had apparently taken out her headphones and was listening to a song. Truthfully, I do not know why she did this, I think she just wanted to annoy L, who had noticed and was now talking about the possible apocalypse.
"Okay, Okay!" J took the headphones out, "We should probably try get the police to-" J was cut off when the screen flashed on, another broadcast from the President.
"I..I would like the world to know that I have a bomb with the power of six kilograms of TNT... In 27 hours this will be sent towards England. That is all." The screen went dark again.
"Well, there's the E, there's the 6, there's the three. Watari, please check the current plans for nationwide military."
"Yes, right away, Miss J." Watari logged onto the computers, "All appear to be aiming attacks towards America."
"Okay then. Try get them to cancel. L and I are going to be hacking into the President's earpiece. 27 hours until the end of the world? No problem. They've never heard of us, have they? Get going then!" As you can probably tell, J had cheered up immensely between her kidnapping and now. This gave Watari a slight happiness, knowing that she could still have a childhood, despite her situation.

Soon enough, the two were able to hack into the President's earpiece. They had devised a code for him to communicate with the two of them. "Hello, Mr President. I apologise for contacting you like this. I am referred to as J, and L is also here. Now, we need your help to stop World War Three. One tap is yes, two is no. First question: Are you the one orchestrating the bombing plot?" A faint tapping, two bears sounded back, and the two children shared a look, a sort of smirk, as if to say 'we were right' "Alright then, question two: Is the person or persons behind the bombing in the room with you?" This time, one beat, "Finally, are you in the White House?" One beat again. J smiled at L, "Well, this should be say then, shouldn't it? Try to get the police or the army or whatever to the White House. Then they can get the bomber, can't they? Simple."
L then turned on the communication line to the police, "Hello. This is L again, could you please arrange for some type of task force to storm the White House. The bomber is there, and it is not the President. Thank You." Then he cut the connection.

I suppose it doesn't need saying that they caught the man, and that the police began to recognise L and J as skilled investigators. Even though I know the story of what happened, and how it happened, I still can't believe that they pretty much stopped World War Three from happening, even if it was a pretty weak attempt at causing a third World War. I suppose that the police mostly forgot who did solve this, but still, those who didn't, well they knew L from the beginning. Were they to discover his real age at that time, I would find their reaction pretty funny.
So this case marked the beginning of L and J's formal cooperation with the police, and still, they were small children, however, those working with them did not know that, and most never would, with the exceptions being that of the select four at Wammy's House, myself included, and those dedicated to finding Kira.
