"Where is my beautiful daughter-in-law?" my mother asked while giving me a hug.
"She's at home sleeping."
"It's almost 12 in the afternoon."
"She hasn't been feeling well lately."
"We could've gotten a rental car, you need to be with your wife if she's sick."
"She wanted me to come get you guys."
"Let the boy be Lily, he knows what he's doing. How's married life treating you?"
"Not that bad, we've had a few arguments but worked through them."
"I'm glad to hear that." I finished putting their bags in my car and helped my mother into her seat. Once everyone was buckled we were headed back to the house. "This is a very beautiful home Eli."
"Thank you mom. Here's the key, you two go ahead and get settled in the guest room and I'll bring your bags in."
"You go ahead Lily I'll help Elijah with the bags." After my mom was in the house my dad turned to me and I knew he only sent my mother inside so that we could talk without her interrupting.
"How are things really between you two?"
"Fine, we're both taking this one day at a time and have been going out on dates to make things less awkward between us."
"Have you two talked about sex?"
"Yes, we both agreed to let that happen naturally."
"You both agreed or you nodded your head yes when she suggested it."
"I agreed, although I won't deny there have been a few times when I've wanted to say screw it and have my way with her I respected her wishes and have been taking a lot of cold showers and working off all this pent up energy I've had lately."
"Have you told her how you feel yet?" My dad knew what really happened between Alana and I and was often my voice of reason when I got frustrated about things.
"What are you talking about?" I said oblivious to what he was talking about.
"You're in love with her, I can tell because you have the same look in your eye that I get when I talk about your mother."
"That obvious?"
"Very, what's holding you back?"
"I don't think she's fully over her ex. She's told me bits and pieces of what happened but I know she's holding back something else. And I don't want to pressure her into something she's not ready for or make her feel obligated to tell me what it is because I asked her to."
"I know it may be frustrating right now but you have to continue to give her time. You may not like it but in the end she'll be ready and glad that you allowed her that time to get herself together. Yes you two got married on accident but you both are developing feelings for one another that have probably been harboring since you to met and are finally realizing how much you both care about one another. You might be ready to tell her how you feel but she's probably scared because she feels the same way and doesn't want to get hurt again. Even if you know you won't, you still have to earn her trust and be there for her."
Meanwhile in the house... Alana
"Hi Mrs. Blake, it's good to see you again." I was headed to the kitchen to get some crackers and ginger ale for my stomach when I saw Elijah's mom sitting in the living room. She stood up and gave me a hug then followed me into the kitchen watching as I got the things I needed to settle my stomach.
"Oh stop with that formal shit, call me Lily or mom. How you feeling sweetheart? Elijah told us you haven't been feeling well."
"Alright, it probably from something I ate." She wouldn't stop smiling at me after she gave me a hug and kept glancing at my stomach ever so often.
"How far along are you?"
"Excuse me."
"As much as your trying to hide it, I felt the baby bump and saw the Happy Mornings tea Elijah was trying to hide in the car." Damn, she's good. After my appointment we found out we were having twins, which explained the strong morning sickness and why I was showing so early.
"13 weeks. We were planning on telling you guys during dinner."
"Your secret is safe with me, now has my son been treating you right because he's not to old for a spanking." I laughed at the serious look she had on her face but knew she was not joking.
"He's been a perfect gentleman, Lily."
"He better, you really make him happy Alana. For a minute there I thought he was going to die alone, but then he told us that you two had gotten married and I was so ecstatic. I want you to know it takes a lot for Elijah to open up to someone, ever since his last girlfriend played him like a fiddle he wouldn't date and had one night stands like they were about to go out of style. Which I understood he was hurting but let me tell you some of those women he brought home had me losing all hope of getting grandchildren. You've changed him into a better man and I want you to know that he's been hurt to, as crazy as it seems you two need each other more than you think." I nodded knowing what she was talking about
Elijah told me about his ex-girlfriend Victoria and his past of being a complete playboy after their break-up. They'd been friends since Pre-K and started dating their freshman year of high school. Even after he'd moved to the US they remained a couple and when he returned to London he proposed to her after she finished university. At their engagement party he over heard her talking to one of his close friends about cheating on him the entire time he'd been overseas and eventually leaving him after they were married so that she could collect alimony and maybe have a child to get child support as well since he just signed a huge soccer deal and was raking in endorsements. Hurt and embarrassed he called off the engagement. He was honest about his playboy past and I appreciated the honesty. I guess it was time for me to be fully honest about what happened between Marcus and I.
"I see where your coming from and I'll have a talk with him after dinner."
"That's good to hear, now I would love it if you gave me a tour of this beautiful house." I did and we talked some more about my pregnancy and she even gave me a few tips that I planned on putting to use, I was glad that I had a mother-in-law as amazing as Lily.
After dinner Elijah and I were sitting on the back patio watching the sun set.
"Your mom and I were talking earlier."
"Really, about what?"
"Us, which made me think about how honest you've been about everything and I haven't."
"It's fine if you're not ready to tell me everything."
"No, I want to. Marcus and I were dating for about four years, everything was great in the beginning. After our two year anniversary things got a little rocky, he cheated and me being young and dumb I forgave him. Little did I know he was still cheating had been for the next two years of our relationship. About a year ago I found out I was pregnant, I was excited and so was Marcus.
I thought maybe this baby might make him man up and we would get married. A few weeks later I had a miscarriage, I was devastated and didn't want to be bothered by anyone. I pushed everyone away because I just needed time, about six months after it happened I came home and overheard him talking on the phone with his coworker. He was planning on leaving me before I told him I was pregnant. His side piece accused me of getting pregnant on purpose just to keep him away from her. When I asked him if he was ever going to tell me all he could say was 'I'm sorry.'"
Elijah didn't say anything but got up from where he was sitting and hugged me while I cried. It was at that moment that I knew that he loved me and that I loved him.
