Keenan was sweating profusely by the time they arrived at the ice cream parlor. He wanted to blame it on the temperature outside but it wasn't even that hot. He knew it was because he was burning up.
"I thought we would eat and talk first before I took you to somewhere else," he mumbled, unbuckling his seat belt. He kept quiet most of the ride there because the tension between them was just too great.
"Whatever," Aurora mumbled, pushing open her door and jumping out.
Keenan mentally cursed himself. He should have thought of opening the door for her. He rushed to the door of the shop before her so he could redeem himself.
She stared at him weirdly before walking right past him. She didn't even say thank you.
Keenan huffed in frustration.
"So do you know what you want," he asked her. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and began to tap his foot. What the heck was going on with him? He's never felt this nervous around a girl before. He liked to blame it on the possibility that he could be punched by the end of the day.
"Yes," Aurora muttered.
"What are you going to get?"
She looked up at him, raising an eye brow. "I'm sorry, are you taking my order or are they?"
Keenan glared at her. "I'm just trying to make conversation."
She rolled her eyes. "I'm not here to make conversation with you Keenan. I'm here to listen to you explain why you're such an ass." She stepped up in line to tell the cashier what she wanted. "Can I have chocolate ice cream with sprinkles and gummy bears?"
"I'm sorry, we ran out of gummy bears yesterday. The new shipment hasn't come in yet," the gangly teenage boy said.
Aurora sighed, clearly disappointed. "Okay, whatever."
"And for you sir?"
Keenan hesitated, thinking hard, before giving his answer. "Cookies and cream with whip cream please." Keenan handed him a ten before turning to Aurora. "I'll be right back, okay?"
She rolled her eyes, once again, and headed for a table in the corner.
Keenan sighed before leaving the shop and jogging down the street. He hoped that when he got back she would still be there.
Of course when he did walk back in she was still sitting in the same place, just getting her ice cream bowl handed to her. Keenan couldn't help but be relieved.
"Here you go," he said, placing the small bag of gummy bears on the table before her.
Aurora looked at them curiously before looking up at him. "Did you just go buy these?"
"Yeah," he shrugged, sliding into the seat across from her. "There's a gas station down the street."
"Um, thanks I guess." She gingerly grabbed the bag.
"It's no problem."
He waited for her to put the gummy's in her ice cream before he took his first bite of his own. On his fourth bite Aurora placed her spoon down on the table.
"So are we just going to eat this entire time or are you going to man up and talk?"
Keenan breathed heavily. "I'll explain everything. Just tell me what you want to know."
