Chapter One

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR MACI, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!"

All of my family sung to me, causing me to smile a cheeky grin. I wasn't that excited to turn seventeen, only because it came after sixteen, and I felt nothing could top my sixteenth birthday party. Although my eighteenth birthday party will definitely be something to look forward to.

My name is Maci Bennett, and I just turned seventeen years old today. I am going to be a senior at Lowry High in Austin, Texas.

I have a twin brother named Tyler, who is the star quarterback for our high school football team, and we are graduating in the middle of August next year.

My parents are pretty much the normal workaholics. They have been pretty supportive of Tyler and me. The only thing upsetting about our family is that Dad is sleeping on the couch right now. Mom and Dad try to play it off as if they are happy together, but Tyler and I aren't little kids anymore, so it's easy to pick up on the hate in their eyes when they talk to or look at each other.

I'm pretty much the hopeless romantic teen. I watch romance movies and eat Ben & Jerry's on the weekends. I've never been popular at school, I shy away from the big crowds with the typical jocks and cheerleaders.

I have had one boyfriend, Scott. He was on the football team but after two months of pretending to be happy with me, he dumped me for Jane Hastings: the school slut. I really despise that girl, not only because Scott dumped me for her, but because about a week later, I heard she cheated on him. I guess you can call that karma. Although I hide from most of the drama circulating around my school, there is one thing I can never seem to hide from, and that's Kaleb Presley.

Today was a normal birthday, same as all of the other ones. I got a new laptop, a new case for my iPhone 5, and clothes. After I opened my presents, I gave a kiss to each of my family members and soon after my best friend Katie and I decided to go up to my bedroom and have our own party.

Katie and I plopped down onto my bed with a fifth of Heaven Hill Vodka and some orange juice on my bed stand. It was already getting close to 8pm, so my mom and dad were going out (hopefully to regain their love for one another) and my brother went out with his friends, so it was just Katie and me home alone.

"So, Did you have a good birthday?" she asked with a huge smile on her face.

Katie is the typical chatty type, but I can't help but love her. She is about 5'6" with long brown hair and hazel eyes. She is down right beautiful, which makes me more than jealous, but she swears she envies me just as much, I don't see how. I am 5'4" with long brown hair as well, and light brown eyes, although my hair never seemed to stay as straight as Katie's did.

Katie has had a difficult life. Her grandma has been in the hospital for over a year battling lung cancer, so once in a blue moon we spend time together, unless we are at school. I am so thankful for her presence on my birthday.

"Eh, it was as expected. Nothing big. Although I am very surprised that Kaleb hasn't come over to bug me yet." She laughed at that. "You know he dropped chocolate milk on my lap yesterday?"

Kaleb Presley. He was your typical bad boy, playboy, every girl drools for him, jerk. He has done nothing but torment me my whole life, and no matter how many times I've came home crying, I've never gotten an apology. Not a even simple, 'Oh, I'm sorry for hurting your feelings'.

Kaleb is confusing though, very confusing. One minute he flirts with me, and the next I'm flying off the monkey bars with a sprained wrist. That was in second grade, and I haven't broken any bones or sprained anything since then, but I have had my hair caught on fire, and my anxiety shoot through the roof.
