"Kase, follow." I commanded my white and tan pitbull. He listened and stayed close behind me. The snow on the ground was getting unusually deep, considering it was summer and all. The half moon shone brightly above our heads, as clear as the skies. I had learned not to go out during a full. They were most powerful day, and night, during a full moon.
I pushed open the doors to the large costco. They had the most items of need. I took one of the well-oiled dolly's to the canned food isle and shoved food on top of the generator.
Something shuffled behind me, I turned around. Nothing was there. They were getting more powrfull, I could feel it. And the more powerfull they got the more brave they were. I was only immune to the disease, I wan't inhuman, they could kill me for sure.
Kase walked close to my side as we headed down the battery isle. This store was almost out. We took the rest of the batteies and i took some oil for the lanterns. Iwalked home. Things shuffled in the darkness, searching for light.
Ya, I know that isn't how things go inthe movies, the evil things like the dark. Well have you ever thought that maybe we were the evil ones? In a world of the after life perhaps the one who remaind alive was the one that was the bad guy? I mean I really do prefer to be out during the night anyway.
Anyway, these things, these...monsters, Don't like artificail light. It's like their skin burns and fries undderneath it. That is why most os my windows are boarded up, and it's why I keep so many thing lit, day and night. It's either sunlight, or fire light. That is how I lure them into my experimental area. I have three or four that are in the make-shift basment/lab. They are all undergoing transformations using vaccines My parents and I have created. We used to have a specail forces team to handel them, but eventually the entire popluation of New York was one of them or dead.
We got up to the mesh metal gate on the side of the aartment building I was living in. I pushed the cart into the manegers suite. That is where I was hiding. It was next to the basement. Underground. Small windows were boarded high up. I took the generator into the lab and replaced it with the almost dead one. I took the dead one above and charged it on the little electricity i had left on one of the old ones. My backup was still full. I went back down into my room.
"Kase. Soda." Kase came and brought me a coke from the mini fridge. The only thing worse than warm coke was no power. So I had stolen a mini fridge from one of the above apartments. I didn'treally steal it if noone owned it. So my recored was still clean.
I sat on the tattered leather chair behind the desk where my beloved APB radio sat.
"Calling out to any survivors. Hello?" Usually I would get no answer, but occasionally I would get a one or two word scentence and heavy beathing from an Infected. They were getting much smarter, they didn't even used to know how to press a button, and now they could form words and use a radio.
"Hello?" A male voice issued from the radio, it wasn't scratchey and monotonus(sp). As most Infected voices were.
"Hello? This Is Karma Nolander from New York. Is this a survivor?" A screeching noise issued from the other sie, then a loud zap. He had vaporized one of the Infected.
"Hi, This is Kaydon freelancer of washington D.C. We have a nomatic survival group." We, So there were more?! OMG! I'm Saved.
"Kaydon, If you would like to travel up here I have a base with multipul generatores and much needed supplies. If your grou is Nomatic you are welcome to stay here." I said, my hapiness almost ending.
"Sure, we would love to. Do you think we could stay long term? What's the adress, we are around the New York City area right now."
"It's 1543 22nd street."
"Ok, according to this map we are in a biulding 17 blocks from yours tonight. I'm sure we can make It by day break. See you in about an hour."
"ok, see you then. Over and out." I finaly found real people! After two monthes alone, I finally have other people to talk to.
*one hour later*
When they got here I checked them all for any sores or bites that could lead to being Infected. None of themhad any.
Kaydon was a tall black haired guy. He looked two years older than me and was the only ne out of the group without a significant other. There were four other people with him and two dogs. Both of the couples seemed to be together and In thier early 20's. Both of the men were tallish and dark, very tan. The women were shorter than the men, but still taller than me, they were both blonde. One, Idnetified as Macey, was pregnant.
I led them into the lab.
"Who here is immune to the disease the russians expelled last december?" Kaydon raised his hand. the other four just ket on looking straight.
"These are my friends. The only way they survived is because of a blood transfusion from my parents when they died." Kaydon explained. They were now immune to the disease.
"In that case, what I am about to tell you may frighten you in some cases. My parents, before they died, tried to create a vaccine using my blood, because I didn't react to the disease at all. My blood cells didn't attack the forign ones, but they didn't allow the virus to take over either, whichis why they thought that my blood would be best. Both of them had become infected and committed suicide because of it in our old home. I continued on with the experimentaion. A couple weeks ago my dog, Kase, had become infected, I then treated him with my latest vaccine. It cured him. Since then Ihave been capturing some of the Infected and putting them inchambers were I injected the Vaccine and kept an eye on them. Here they are. Some are in the final stages of trnasforming back, and one has died.
"In order to be able to take shelter here I need you to understand the importance of my testing. and I need full corroperation." they all nodded.
"Now here are my quaters."I opened the door to a hall in which many rooms were kept in, One was the live in maids rooms, and the manegers room, and the groundskeppers room.
"I take my residence in the Maneger suite and I think it would be best to just move beds in there and sare it. There are saftey in numbers." Kaydon went into th other rooms and brought three other beds into the living room. One for him and the two couples.
"I see you have a nice stockpile of supplies. You don't supose we could become permanatly satying?" I nodded and he smiled crookedly at me. Ha, he was cute. Look at me, the world is ending, there is a new Ice Age comming, and I'm commenting onhis cutness.:)
Sun light shone through the gaps in the planks of the windows and yawned and slept on the fourth bed in the room. they did the same. The rythmic shuffling of the Infected above us was like a sweet song and I was instantly lulled to sleep.
