Josh

We didn't speak after.

The kiss was something I never could've imagined. I mean, sure, I've kissed a lot of girls. But nothing compares to when I kissed Chloe.

But afterwards, we didn't talk to each other. Weeks went by, and no word from her.

I was too scared to contact her. She gave me a feeling that I couldn't explain. I felt like I'd say the the wrong thing if I tired to talk to her.

"You're a wuss." Lucas snarled one evening, his arm snaked around Mackenzie.

"Am not." I mumbled, crossing my arms and leaning back into my seat.

"If you haven't talked to her in weeks, then your both scared," Nick laughed from the other side of the room.

I rolled my eyes. "It's not my fault she males me nervous."

Mackenzie scoffed. "Please. Josh, you're the biggest idiot in the world if you get nervous. Can you imagine how she's feeling right now? Her biggest idol is ignoring her right now, Josh."

I stared blankly at her, her words sinking in. I hadn't meant to make Chloe feel bad. I just figured that she didn't care enough to call me.

"Well why hasn't she called?" I snapped.

Mackenzie bit her lip. "She's afraid to say the wrong thing Josh. It's just-"

She was cut off by the sound of a ding.

"It's Chloe." Mackenzie sighed.

"No, babe," Lucas groaned. "She's gonna ask you to come over."

"But-"

"Please?" He asked, giving her big eyes.

She sighed, and pushed decline on her phone. "She'll be upset, but she'll live."

I looked over at Mackenzie with disappointment. She was the one who said that Chloe was going through a rough patch. So why was she ignoring Chloe?

"Are you fucking kidding me, Mackenzie?" I spat, making her flinch at my tone.

She narrowed her dark brown eyes. "What's your problem, Hyland?"

"You're ignoring her, that's my problem," I yelled. "You're the one who was telling me not to ignore Chloe, and you do the exact same thing! Mackenzie, you're a hypocrite!"

Her eyes softened, realizing what she did. She say like that for a good minute, then her phone dinged.

"It's a message form Chloe." She whispered.

She pressed play, and we all listened in.

"Okay, now you're ignoring me? Oh please, give me a fucking break, Kenz! I know you have a boyfriend now and everything, but guess what bitch, I'm your best friend. You have absolutely no right to ignore me. I'm the one who you're gonna come crying to once he breaks your fragile little heart. And I'm not gonna let you use my shoulder to cry on when he-"

The line beeped.

Mackenzie gulped, probably swallowing a lump down her throat. "Well I feel like shit."

Lucas looked angry. "She had no right to talk to you like that."

"Yes she did." She sighed, biting her bottom lip.

"No-"

"Yes, Lucas, she had every right to talk to me like that," Mackenzie said, her voicing cracking in the middle. "I've been a horrible friend ever since I've started dating you. I've been ignoring her and putting her to side when she needs me the most. And now I'm hanging out with the boys she's idolized for month, and I-I need to go apologize."

And with that, Mackenzie was out the door.

The room was silent for another minute. No one knew what to say after that. After a couple minutes of quiet, Lucas sighed. "I'm such a dick."

"Yeah," I snapped. "You are."

Then I stood up, walking over to the door.

"Where're you going?" Zack sighed, running some fingers through his long hair.

"With Mackenzie. I too have some apologizing to do too." I spat, opening the door, and slamming it behind me.

By the time I reached Mackenzie, she was waiting a stop light to cross the road. When she noticed I was in her presence, she rolled her eyes. "What do you want?"

I shook my head. "I'm trying to make things right with Chloe. I've been treating her like crap."

Mackenzie nodded. "Same. I feel like I've been a terrible friend for the past couple of weeks. She's been going through such a hard with Maddie-"

"Who's Maddie?" I questioned, cutting her off.

She sighed, picking at her fingernail. "She's my twin sister. She's been...uh...giving Chloe a hard time for awhile now."

I stared at her. "What do you mean?"

Mackenzie shook her head, placing her hands over her eyes. "Maddie's been bullying Chloe since third grade. Third grade Josh! She's told me to stand up to Maddie before, but I couldn't. I-I just feel such a terrible friend right now. And I'm afraid if I don't saying anything we'll lose her for good!"

By now, the opportunity to cross the street was long gone. Her eyes were puffy, and her hair was messed up. Brown eyes were filled with sadness I wish I could mend.

"What do you mean by lose her?" I asked warily, afraid of the answer.

Mackenzie didn't answer for a bit, just looking down at the jagged sidewalk. She bit her lip, and stared up at me.

"I'm afraid she's gonna kill herself."

And with that, her phone dinged, making her eyes grow wide. Her lips parted, and she stared helplessly down at her phone. "Oh my god." She muttered.

"What is it, Mackenzie?" I questioned.

She swallowed a lump in her throat, and turned up to look at me. "My sister completely let it all out."

And with that, Mackenzie burst into tears. She took deep breaths to try and calm herself, but it didn't work. She struggled to make words come out, but eventually did.

"Ch-Chloe's gonna hate me," She sobbed. "Nothing I do is gonna make her wanna be my friend again. God, I should've stood up to Maddie when I had the chance, not when-"

I don't know what came over me, but I cut her off my smashing my lips onto hers."
