Raina's pov;
(exciting for some of you? no? ok bye)As we take off running, I look over my shoulder and see that every other tribute left from the bloodbath has taken the idea to go on the bright side of the arena. It still is possible that we could approach others deeper into the maze.
We finally stop to catch our breaths when Roman stops dead in his tracks, causing me to run full force into him. He and I tumble over onto the ground.
"Why did..." I breathe, "Why did you stop?"
He's quick to get back on his feet like nothing happened. He offers his hand to me and I instantly take it. He pulls me up fast, causing my chest to nearly crash onto his.
Roman presses his foot into the dirt lightly."Did anyone grab those night glasses?" Roman requests.
We are still near the front of the maze. It has finally become dark enough for the much needed glasses.
"I did." I proclaim, taking one of my small packs and opening it up wide.
There sits 8 pairs of night glasses, and 5 pairs of the sunglasses."How did you manage to grab so many?" Talisa
asks me.Each of us grab a pair and put them on before I ramble.
"The gamemakers didn't do a very fine job hiding them. These things were all sitting in a pile on the table. They should have known that someone would have scooped the entire pile. Usually these are found rare in individual packs."
"Maybe the gamemakers wanted tributes to fight over them." Kolton states.
It's a possibility.
"Who cares? As long as no one knows we have all of these, they won't hunt us down for them. But the careers. We are their number one target. We must be take cover soon and set up a hidden camp." Talisa suggests.
We all nod and continue walking deeper into the rose maze. The smell of white roses sort of being an unsettling feeling to me for some reason.
Getting about a half hour into walking, all of us are occasionally keeping conversation, getting to know one another as allies.
Roman lags behind a few inches, still staying cautious of his footsteps."Is there something we should worry about, Roman?" I cross my arms, and my walking comes to a stop. The rest turn around to examine the situation.
He starts to smile to himself as he digs the dirt a little bit with his foot. Suddenly, he drops his body to the ground, pressing his ear into the dirt.
What the heck is he doing?"Someone make a loud footstep near my ear!" he shouts excitedly.
"With how strange you're acting, I think I should make a foot imprint into your head."
Kolton chuckles at his own joke and does as Roman asked."Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ground might be hollow."
"Hollow?"
Instead of trying to figure out the maze, we escape under it?
"It might have a foot or so of dirt before it reaches hollow ground."
Roman reaches into his pack and pulls out the shovel he took from the cornucopia.
"We need a good spot to start digging." I say.
"What's over there?" Kolton points forward toward a dead end.
I am the one to examine the spot.
"No one would find us if we dig in this dead end. They would just keep walking past."
Talisa says weakly, before running over to the other side of the wall to throw up.
I accompany her as Roman starts to dig his shovel into the ground. Her pale skin seems even paler than before, according my my night vision glasses.
I bring her back where the digging sounds are, and sit next to her as the three of us encourage Roman to keep shoveling.
"So how did this happen?" I ask Talisa.
"What happen? The games? The quarter quell, or my pregnancy?"
"The pregnancy."
She looks down at her growing stomach, and slightly shakes her head.
"You and I will keep watch tonight, I'll tell you then." she murmurs.
To know she has more trust in me than the others, I smile a bit and nod my head.
Well, I don't know if it's really a trust issue, I think of it more as possibly a girl thing she wants to discuss with me.Either way, I pity her.
