-Chapter- 2
She looked up at the clouded sky, somehow it made her feel more at peace than she had in days. Uma always hid away from people when something was bothering her, but this time it was different. This time, she didn't know what was bothering her.
The wind blew her dark hair towards her face, making Uma seem even more lifeless than before. The feeling of something that's about to happen hadn't left her for days. Mornings, lessons, meals, nights all rushed past at an alarming speed, those few days she ignored just about everyone and, in return, they ignored her. She kept recapping the day she got the feeling, searching for something to help her in her mystery, but it was no use- the day had been just like any other.
It started off the same- her trying to get to the bathroom before anyone else in the household. Then, stopping only to make a sarcastic comment about one of her father's hideous shirts, she rushed to school. In every lesson Uma had that day she sat at the back of the classroom talking to whoever was sitting next to her- barely paying any attention to the teacher. At lunch there were comments about the length of her skirt (positive from boys, negative from girls), as usually she replied with a sentence that had everybody's mouths hanging open and as usual she sat at the table closer to the door of the canteen with the rest of her friends already seated. When Uma got home there was an 'amusing' story about someone from her brother and a comment on some rumour that a blonde girl with ASD (Attention Seeking Disorder) started about herself. A change of clothes, a quick run through her hair with a brush and Uma was set to hang out with the type of people her mother -being the older version of the blonde girl with ASD- wouldn't approve of, but that's why some old guy invented lying. After the quick get-together she went home and fell asleep listening to music.
Everything was normal; there was nothing out of the ordinary. But the feeling just didn't go away.
She remembered when kids at the playground used to call her a freak because she could tell when someone would want to have a go on the swings or which of the two- or more- elevators would come first.
The memories made her smile. Even though she used to cry because of her so called sixth sense, now though she knew it was nothing but good intuition. Uma loved everything that had to do with the past, not just her past but anyone's past that was the only reason she listened in History lessons and only talked to people with an interesting past.
She replayed the scene in the park when she was with her friends from 'the wrong side on town' over and over again.
There was a guy there. He was by the entrance to the park so she passed him on her way, their eyes met for the briefest of moments but -unlike in all those cliché love stories- she didn't think he was the one, she just thought that he had or will have something to do with her. Uma shook her head it couldn't be that she must be going crazy from not having any human contact for nearly a week.
A light drizzle started, it was only then was Uma able to break away from her thoughts. As she set of on a forty-five minute walk home, someone tapped her shoulder. She turned around to see a girl from her school; Uma knew who the girl was but never actually spoken to her. The girl smiled, silently handed Uma the bracelet she must have dropped and skipped away in the opposite direction.
That encounter made Uma feel more normal than she had in days. But it reminded her of how she got the bracelet.
It was cold- colder than that day, colder than tonight even- but Uma was wearing light, khaki skinnies, a green top and a black jacket made out of very thin material. A fight broke out between two girls who, Uma, always assumed to being best friends, one of the girls- Alisha- threw her bag at Uma.
''Hold it, I'm sick of this girl.'' Alisha said glaring at the other girl. Uma didn't bother to pay attention to the fight as she knew it was soon to be broken up.
''Thanks, for holding it! You're probably wondering why I asked you to hold it.'' Even though she had a few serious bruises, Alisha was talking as if that happened every day. For all Uma knew maybe it did.
''Well yeah sort of...'' Uma trailed of a bit, not even sure why she was talking to Alisha having no interest in the girl what so ever.
''It's because most people would be too interested in the fight. The funny thing is that this is my last day here, my family are all moving to Australia.'' Even though Uma didn't really care, she still felt sorry for the girl.
''Oh... Why did you guys fight anyway?'' she asked not knowing how to hint to Alisha that she had to go.
''Oh, it doesn't matter! Thanks anyway.'' Alisha gave Uma an awkward hug and got into a black SUV.
Then Uma's phone vibrated in her jacket pocket, as she reached for it her hand came across the bracelet. It was no use trying to give it back, so she wore it ever since.
It's weird how such little things could have such a big impact on people.
Not even noticing, Uma was standing in front of her house. She unlocked the door and walked in. her mother rushed over to her.
''Aww, you're all wet! Do you know, how much this costs?'' Uma couldn't help rolling her eyes.
''It's wonderful to see you too, mother. I'm fine just had a walk. No, no don't worry I'm not cold at all!''
''Oh, shut up and go to your room, Miss Sarcasm.'' And with that Uma did actually go to her room, not because she was told to but because there she would be able to isolate herself from what happened next.
