-Chapter- 3
Frustrated, Barrett set down the pencil that he was supposed to be using for math, and stared out of the window. The day, which had started out so sunny, was becoming overcast, and a few wimpy raindrops fell to the ground. Barret sighed, and turned back to his math problems, only to find himself staring at the page blankly. It was no good. Barrett just couldn't focus today, same as his sister. He'd noticed that she had seemed far off and distant all day, and when he had asked her why, she had snapped at him and slammed the door to her room. It was unlike Uma to be so uptight, but then again, it was unlike himself to be disinterested in school.
Ever since Barrett could remember, he had enjoyed learning new things. Studies fascinated him. This liking for school made him a geek in the eyes of his "cool' schoolmates, but Barrett had never cared about what others thought of him.
Barrett ran his fingers through his dark, curly hair, and put the math back into his backpack. He heard Uma and his mom shouting at each other from downstairs, so he turned the radio up loud and flopped on his bed. His room reflected interests not typical of a seventeen year old guy. Instead of rock posters hanging on the walls, Barrett had charts of the peridoc table. Instead of computers, ipods and tvs, Barrett had stacks of books lining the walls. Even Uma called him weird, but Barrett was content. If the rest of the world wanted to squander their lives away on girls and texting, that was their problem.
Thinking about problems reminded Barrett about his. How was he going to pass the math test if he couldn't even study? All day, Barrett hadn't been able to shake off the nasty feeling that something was wrong. But what? It had been a normal day, a normal week in fact. Barrett closed his eyes, the feeling was stressing him out.
Suddenly, the door slamming open broke the tension. It was Uma, and she looked mad.
"Mom wants you," she said shortly. Barrett stood up.
"Uma, what's...?" Uma didn't let him finish.
"Never mind." She shut the door behind her. Barrett shrugged and followed her out of the room.
