-Chapter- 5
Cameron's heart pounded deep inside his chest when the text came in from Philippa. She was on her way. The realization that he was in love hit him when he had turned the age of thirteen. It has been five years he's kept it hidden. Cameron didn't think she shared his feelings so after a year or so, reluctantly, he moved on to other girls. None of them could satisfy him though and each and every relationship was ended, usually by the girl, because he seemed distant and didn't pay enough attention to them. It was true. He hadn't. Every girl he had dated, he had found himself comparing them to Philippa and none could even get close enough to her. They had been best friends since early childhood. Cameron could still recall teasing and chasing her around the playground. She would always keep her distance from him saying, "Boys have cooties." Their bond strengthened until they were best friends and Cameron stills believes it's still growing. When Philippa moved away from across the steet, a dreaded feeling started in his chest, which he soon discovered was called heartache. Cameron had a feeling that where she was living now, with her aunt and cousins, that something wasn't right. He noticed Philippa changing and he wasn't sure it was for the better.
The loud throng of the doorbell below sent his blood rate sky rocketing and his heart racing even faster. His footsteps pounded down the stairs and he flung the door open.
"Hi Phil," Cameron smiled and opened the door wider so she could come in. Cameron had called her Phil for as long as he could remember.
"Hey," she smiled and once again his heart rate quickened. Philippa walked in and sat down on the stairs. Cameron quickly sat beside her.
"You alright?" He asked worriedly, causing his face to wrinkle.
She nodded quickly, "Yeah, I'm fine." Something told him she wasn't, but he trusted her.
"How about we go on a walk? It feels really nice outside," Cameron commented, feigning happiness. She nodded and with that they both got to their feet and shut the door behind them.
"Where were your parents?" Philippa questioned, looking up at him.
Cameron took in a deep breath, "Dad left on another business trip, and of course Mom is mad. So--" He cut off.
"They're fighting again?" Philippa seemed to always know what he was thinking. Cameron gave her a half shrug and nodded.
"I'm sorry," she spoke sympathetically, causing his heart to melt.
"Don't worry about it," Cameron said quickly and managed a half-smile in her direction. Cameron and Philippa reached one of the many parks in their town and sat down on a bench. Two people, a boy and a girl, who looked a lot alike passed them slowly.
"I've seen her before," Philippa whispered in his ear, staring down at her...arm? On her arm, a bracelet was wrapped loosely around her wrist. The boy, probably her brother, spoke quietly to her and she didn't appear to be in the best mood."I wonder what's wrong," Philippa continued, "I feel like I've seen the guy before too. Don't you?"
Cameron shrugged, "Probably." The way she was looking at him, confused him though she looked confused herself. "We've probably seen them at school, maybe last year? I mean, where else would we know them from?"
Philippa began to look annoyed, "No Cameron, like I know them more than that." Cameron looked back at the two people. Something strange stirred inside of him. Familiarity? No, he was certain he hadn't seen them more than maybe once at school. All of the sudden a feeling of dread shook him. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong...
