Not Love, but a Lesson

My thoughts tiptoe around you but you are there,

At every corner, in every nook, and every aperture.

So my thoughts trip, fall, and crash into you

And what I thought was truly love, but was really a lesson.

Along the way we lost each other to the other,

No longer paying attention where one began or ended.

So when the yelling and screaming were finished,

And the blaming, the what-ifs, and crying ceased,

I realized just how much of myself I gave away.

Just like the lovers in the movies we thought were cliche,

We thought we had forever and thought it was true love.

We were too blinded by love to notice the stars above

Had deemed our love unfit and stained it with inevitable doom.

It was on a collision course with ruin from the beginning, I assume.

So now, like an old car that has been abandoned, I'm missing a lot of my parts.

We didn't understand what we were doing when we stole each other's hearts.
