Chapter Seven:

Sunday Morning

River Quinn

Nirvana’s laugh was truly something to witness. Now I don’t mean to be corny but the sound of her laughter reminded me of wind chimes clinking away in the warm summer breeze. Okay, so that sounded pretty corny but it was the truth nonetheless. She was also a great listener and she laughed at my jokes, which was a bonus for me. Another thing I had figured out about her by being around her was that she wasn’t a girly girl and she wasn’t fake, like most girls tended to be these days. All this I had learned in just a few hours of getting to know her.

The fact that her classmates seemed to label her as a freak seriously had me intrigued to no end. I was dying to figure out the reasons but I refused to just come out and ask her since it seemed to be a subject she wasn’t comfortable with.

She seemed to be really enjoying my company almost as much as I was enjoying hers. That was, until the door of the Fro Yo Shop dinged as someone entered. Now I’m not the most observant guy in the world but it wasn’t too hard to see how Nirvana seemed to tense instantly when she spotted who had come in. My back was to the door so I had to turn around to see who it was that seemed to freeze her on the spot.

To my surprise it was the drunk, blonde dude I had driven home last night. I couldn’t recall his name but I waved at him anyways as he made his way towards us. He nodded his head at me in the form of a greeting and bumped my fist in a friendly manner, which I returned.

I could tell this seemed to shock Nirvana from the way her eyes visibly widened up.

“How’s it going man?” he asked me and glanced at Nirvana who was staring down at her yogurt as if it was the most interesting thing in this room.

“Pretty good, how’s the hangover treating you?” I said back, causing him to chuckle and roll his eyes.

“I’ve had worse” he told me.

“What are you doing here, Will?” Nirvana finally spoke and her tone of voice didn’t sound too friendly. Will seemed taken aback by her hostility.

“I’m here to get some yogurt of course, same as you guys. I’m going to order and I’ll be right back” he said before heading to the counter. Nirvana sighed and pushed her yogurt away.

“Are you alright?” I asked her, concern etched in my voice. But just as she was about to answer me, Will came back with a big cup of frozen yogurt. He pulled a chair away from the neighbor table and squeezed himself between Nirvana and me. And this may sound cynical but it seemed like he did that deliberately.

It didn’t go unnoticed when Nirvana pushed her chair slightly away from him.

“So I didn’t catch your name last night at the party dude” Will commented.

“River” I said taking a big spoonful of my yogurt.

“Cool, I’m Will but you probably already knew that” he said arrogantly. I finished my yogurt and looked over towards Nirvana who seemed to have all of her yogurt left over.

“Hey are you gonna finish that?” I asked her.

She shook her head and I quickly grabbed the cup of half not so frozen anymore melted yogurt.

“Could you at least use your own spoon?” she exclaimed exasperatedly looked away from me in a disgusted manner.

“Um ok sorry…” I said and did as I was told. What was that about? After Will and I finished the yogurts, he casually leaned back against his chair and slung arm around Nirvana’s chair. Was he her boyfriend or what? I was getting mixed signals here. And what was up with that Hazel chick last night? So many questions and no answers.
