Chapter Eleven: Tree House Haven
Nirvana Evans
The minute I launch myself towards River I instantly close my eyes. I don’t want to see if he accidentally drops me. The height I jump is only a two story house but it feels like a sky scraper. I’m mentally freaking out so much that I can’t even tell if I land in Rivers arms or on the hard floor when I feel the impact of my body colliding with something. About a minute passes before I feel the cool breath of a soft sigh close to my ear. It sends shivers down my spine.
“Nirvana you can open your eyes now” I hear River’s voice remind me. I slowly open my eyelids to find his slightly blurry face only centimeters away from mine. Wait, blurry? I also notice my arms are wound tightly around River’s neck as I hold on to him for dear life. When did I do that? Hmm.
He stares down at me and for a moment I’m too caught up in his eyes to move. His light grey eyes are so unique and the slight mix of green that runs through them is simply captivating. I also notice the silver piercing in his right eyebrow. I wonder how I missed that before.
I don’t realize I’m starring for so long until I hear him clear his throat.
And it makes me almost want to die of embarrassment.
“Oh um…sorry. I’m still a bit stunned” I say unlocking my hands from his neck as he gently sets me back down on my feet. My surroundings are looking a bit out of focus and it’s enough to momentarily freak me out. That’s when I realize my glasses are missing. Idiot why didn’t you take them off before jumping, I think to myself.
“That’s alright, I’m guessing you don’t do this every day” he says with a laugh as he bends down to retrieve my dark rimmed glasses. I gratefully accept them and place them back on my face. Ah much better, I think as everything turns sharper. There is a small crack at the edge of the left lens but I don’t really mind right now. We start walking away from my house. I notice he’s carrying a small black backpack on his shoulders.
“Do you?” I reply back at him.
“No I find it more practical to use the front door” he says teasingly making me laugh.
“That’s no fun”
“Oh yeah cause you looked like you were having loads of fun. I thought you were never going to let go of me. I was starting to think I would need pliers” he jokes but I can’t stop the furious blush take makes itself known on my pale face.
“Aw you’re as red as a tomato! But it’s adorable. Suits you” His comment doesn’t help my redness fade away any quicker. I playfully punch his arm and he clutches it and pretends like I actually hurt him. But in truth I think I hurt my hand more than his arm. It’s a pretty solid arm. We walk down the street and I curiously wonder where we’re going but I don’t ask. The powerful rays of the sun are shining down on us and I’m not wearing any sun block. Crap. Well maybe I’ll get a nice tan instead of a red face. Ha, in my dreams.
After a while of wandering around aimlessly through streets of our small town I finally decide to ask.
“Do you have any idea where were going?” I question as I gaze up at him. I’m proud to say that he’s taller than me.
“Of course” he replies back sounding confident to which I shrug in return.
Finally we reach our destination and the familiar smell of coffee beans hits me before we enter. Oh no. Anywhere but here.
