Around to the part of the movie where Romeo and Juliet sleep together after Romeo kills Tybalt and Tybalt killed Mercutio, I got a sudden urge to sleep. I couldn't sleep the night before because all I thought about was David. He looks at me as my eyes flutter and he pulls a knitted blanket up to my shoulders.
"Didn't you sleep last night?" He asked.
"No." I said with a yawn. "I've been having trouble falling asleep at night lately."
He made sure I was tucked in and let me rest my head on his shoulder and I fell right asleep.
I could hear the whole movie in my sleep and vividly saw it play out in my mind. I woke up when Juliet killed herself with a dager and saw that David took off his shirt and was sleeping beside me with his arms wrapped around me. I fell back asleep.
We both woke up when we heard a key rattling in David's door. The door opened before we could move. It was his Uncle Tedd.
David sighed in relief. "Gosh, Tedd I thought you where my dad."
"Quite close to it." He said. "I'm just here to put your clothes away. You can get back to your little 'thing' when I leave."
"We just fell asleep during a movie." David said.
"Why's your shirt off?" Tedd asked.
"My room has no air conditioning. It's like a million degrees in here."
I look at the TV seeing that the television now has a blue screen indicating the movie was over. "Oh. My. God. How long have we been sleeping."
Tedd looked at his watch. "Well it's five thirty."
"Oh god. Dad is going to kill me." I said while rubbing my eyes.
"You? What do you think my Dad's gonna say about a girl who actually slept in my bed." David said pulling on his shirt.
"Oh David. Your Dad is at Emily's house for dinner." Tedd said.
"I better call my Dad." I said.
"I'll walk you out." David said and I saw him turn to Tedd as he was leading me out. "Thanks alot, Tedd." He whispered in a sarcastic tone under his breath.
"No problem."
When we got out David put my board on his bike and said he'll ride it home for me.
"Thank you." I say.
"Don't mention it."
"Uh. Can I tell you something?" He asked as we started heading down the road.
"Sure."
"What was your mom like?" I just stared at him. "Gosh. Sorry. I know I sound like an idiot."
"No. It's okay. I've been needing to talk about her for quite a while." I held my head down and thought for a moment. "Uh. All I know is that she surfed. Other than that I don't know much about her. "
David looked surprised. "Was your mom Dana Mason?"
"Yeah. How'd you know?"
''She is a small town surf legend. She was the most won surfing star in town.
"Yeah? How come my dad never told me." I asked.
"I don't know. He must have a reason."
"You know we still have a board of hers. We never use it though. We hung it in our living room in her honor. But she wrote me a note before the shooting. She wrote it while she was at the bank and put it in her purse to give my dad. It said 'I want you to follow your dreams just like I did mine.' She said that if I ever wanted to use The Cruiser that she would trust me with it. That's what she called her board. 'It is meant for you. No one else. I love you."
"Wow. Can I see it.''
"Yeah, sure. We brought it with us and hung it on the wall."
"Let's go." He said.
As we walked up to my door he asked me "What waves are you hoping to surf one day."
" I would say Mavericks in California and Jeffery's Bay in South Africa."
"Wow. Some gnarly choses you got." He said.
We laughed. "Yeah but it's possible." I said as we ran in. We both said hi to our Dad's as we ran through the kitchen to the living room in the back. "Here it is." I said pointing at the board on the wall.
"Wow. The Cruiser."
"And I pretty much inherited it."
"You looking at the Cruiser?" I heard my dad's voice come from the door way and saw David's Dad beside him.
"And I'm gonna use it one day."
"What does she mean?" David's Dad said.
"Her mom gave it to Emily in her will." Dad told him.
"You know." David's dad said. "Theres a competition next week and I've seen your daughter surf. I think she could win if she has the right board." David's dad said nodding at the board."
"Guess I'll sign her up." Dad said.
I ran to him and gave him a hug. "Thank you dad."
"You're welcome." He said then let go. "Your brother will watch you two while we go sign you up, Emily."
"Okay, Dad." I said then ran back to David and hugged him around the neck. This is great. My first competition. I sure know that I could win this.
