SUMMER X MACKENZIE
Mackenzie was reading one of Henri's books. Henri was sleeping, letting soft sounds out of his mouth, as opposed to Daniel. Daniel was ranting once again, writing down on his notepad and loudly debating with his mind, consequently keeping Summer from getting her well deserved one-hour-until-they-land sleep.
Clearly bored and tired, Summer thanked the Lord she'd let Daniel keep the window seat, and jumped over to the empty pair of seats lined up with Mackenzie's. The flying contraption didn't offer any kind of entertainment and the green-eyed girl looked like a good chat. Actually, Summer found it particularly strange how closed off the girl was, only exchanging a few written words and drawn images with the lanky boy beside her. Usually, it was easy to get people to open up to her—it only took a smile and some kind words.
But not Mackenzie Maine. It seemed that the more she smiled, the more suspicious the girl grew. Sweet words aren't kind, it's what Mac really thinks. Honest words are. If spoken, or written, in the right way honesty could be as soft and smooth as the clouds in the sky. Small words with big meaning, her grandmother used to say to her. Best kind of words. Simple. Kind. True.
She knew that Summer was on her way to disturb the newly created peace. She knew that the red-headed Cheshire Cat was about to invade her personal space. Her breath would fan her ear and expectant eyes would measure her. Just the thought of it made her shiver. Apparently, she shivered too hard, for Henri showed signs of waking up—his head nestled in the crook of her neck and his hands grasped one another. Oh, God.
Before Summer could do anything drastic and ruin the intimacy going on there, Mackenzie slowly turned her head, and whispered a very careful what do you want, Summer?
And no, sweet Summer Hills was no offended, but damn how that girl was cold. If there is one thing that Summer thought herself to be capable of was making people feel better. And Mackenzie Maine was someone who had something to feel better about. There was no way she was that closed off without hiding something. But what could it be?
"Just wanted someone to talk." She mumbled with a tight smile. It was no secret that harsh people made her uncomfortable.
Mackenzie frowned. Maybe she was being a little bitchy with the girl. Maybe she should just smile. But... "What about Danny?"
"I think he is in his mind castle." She whispered fondly with a sigh.
Wait. Did she just make a reference to Sherlock? "Is he overdosing?" Mackenzie joked. Apparently, Summer didn't get it. Her eyes looked like they were going to jump out of their sockets and she was clearly about to shout. "I'm kidding! I thought you were making a reference to something."
"Don't do that!" She whispered angrily. Something about that triggered a feeling inside Mackenzie. A funny little bubbly feeling in the end of her lungs, tickling its way upwards to her throat and out of her mouth came something that resembled a laugh. She chuckled as quietly and still as possible, but her shoulders were making small jerking motions and Henri's head was about to fall.
With very careful hands she resettled him. He needed some sleep, judging from the small bags under his eyes.
"Sorry, Summer." She mumbled smiling. That was enough for Summer. That cute little smile. It was already done, now; no way back.
"It's okay, Mac." she laughed. "Everything is okay."
"It is." Mackenzie agreed, looking at the sleeping boy on her shoulders. "Everything is great."
They were silent for a moment. It was a good silence, like most are. Summer looked at Mackenzie, that looked at Henri, that dreamed of everything and anything. The flight wouldn't last long, they were twenty minutes into it already, but in the darkness of the plane and the silence of the people, Mackenzie felt like she could do it. Like she could trust Summer with a very important question that's been haunting her for about three hours now. So she did it. Her head turned slowly and she sported a frown on her face. It bugged Summer to see it. Especially on Mac. She was always so expressionless that when she did express any kind of emotion, it was a little weird.
"Summer," Mackenzie started. Sweet voice for such hard words. "What will happen to us when we land?"
Safe to say she wasn't the only one thinking that. Summer looked at Daniel while thinking the answer. He was an extraordinary boy. Never had she looked at such and thought something other than funny. Because usually different people were funny. They were clueless to what made them different. But not Daniel Webber. He knew exactly what made him so special and embraced it. He knew he was smart. He knew he was more than capable. But did he know anything else? It looked like he knew everything while claiming to know nothing. And based on this same boy, Summer came to a conclusion. "I don't know, Mac. I really don't."
"Huh." was the answer. "Do you think we'll be in touch? I feel like there is something more to this than just... this."
"Maybe this is all we get." Summer said resting her head on the chair. "And I'm pretty damn content to have had this."
"You've been spending to much time with Danny."
"Yes," Summer giggled. "Yes, I've been."
