12: THE HUNT

DANIEL

He was alone, at last. His friend was probably at some frat party in which he would find his next girl to bring home and have Danny kick her off. It was a routine. He had no pity and the friend—Patrick—had no shame. Or no heart, you can choose. Either way, it was entertaining to see how many different forms of "get out" Danny could muster.

The apartment wasn't big—Patrick was a college student after all—but there were a kitchen and a sofa; everything any man could ever need. Dropping his bag on the ground he headed to the fridge. Unfortunately for his stomach, there was only beer. Fortunately for him, he loved beer. Maybe later he would hit the streets and get something to eat, but right now he was very content with his beer.

It has been a tough day, he thinks so, and we couldn't agree more. Daniel deserves to relax, but please, tell me. How can you relax when your best friend is a crazy motherfucker?

Danny had just closed his eyes when the door burst open and two girls come stumbling in with a very drunk Patrick Kneel. They kiss for a while and laugh for a few minutes and waddle into the room. He thinks that at least they got into the room, that he can stay quiet in his place and just read until it's over. But oh God, the noises. They weren't normal. It sounded like an alien was fucking a buffalo with autotune.

Once again, there he was. Backpack on his back marching to the closest cafe where he can try and get his mind right. He sits. He orders. And finally, he relaxes. But you see; it's not that easy. Daniel Webber is a very chill guy. He likes almost everything, accepts almost everyone; he just doesn't care, actually. You do what you want and he will do what he wants. But once that what you want interferes with what he wants you're in deep shit. Call it selfish, call it stupid, call it whatever you like. Once again, he doesn't care.

Now, all he wanted at the moment was a moment of peace. And apparently, he can't have it. Because the girls on the counter keep looking at him. It's quite unsettling and he feels himself grow exasperated at each glance they throw his way. He knows he's handsome. He is quite aware of his good looks. Blue eyes and dark hair seemed to be popular amongst the girls nowadays. But this was just overbearing and, quite frankly, desperate.

Expecting them to just giggle, he nods at their directions. One of them—the small blonde girl in the middle of the group—was pushed at his direction and soon enough he realized where this game like situation would lead. He nodded; she came over. His move.

"Hi?" He asked the frozen girl next to his table.

"Hi!" She answered, a little too happy. Shit. His move again.

"Do you need something?" and he didn't mean to come out as rude. He just wanted this over with.

"Hum..I-I," it seemed like she was swallowing her words. "May I sit?"

He nodded.

"I'm Autumn."

This was just ridiculous. Sometimes he wondered how the cosmos managed such irony to a simple situation.

"I'm Daniel." He said laughing. The girl—Autumn—was growing redder by the second.

"It's nice to meet you, Danny." he noticed how her voice dropped an octave. He noticed how she inclined her body forward. He could read her like a book.

He just nodded at that because it wasn't really nice to meet her. He wasn't in the mood to meet people. The last two people he met—or almost met—ended up having a gruesome threesome with his best friend, so it was for the best.

"Are you from here?" She asked and it was just too easy. Her elbows were pushed together, pushing other things up. He could look. He really could. But the thing was; he didn't want to. He wasn't interested in that girl in the slightest. Her looks didn't entice anything in him and nor did her personality.

"Why?" he decided to ask. "Need a guide?"

"That would be amazing!"

"It would, wouldn't it?" Danny said. "I guess today is not your lucky day, then."

"What?" her face fell in such a way that he almost felt something. Keyword, almost.

"I don't know the city." Liar liar pants on fire.

"Oh, I thought-"

"You thought wrong." He said leaning in, closer to her. "You thought wrong about everything."

He felt like a hero when she got the hint.

"I-I... But I-" Shaking her head she got up. Not even two seconds later, she's back. Almost as if it was a different person, she gently put a paper into his T-Shirt pocket. "Well, anyways. Call me if you're lonely. Believe me... you will get lonely." And with a weird wink, she left to her cheering friends.

Daniel Webber always considered himself a very straightforward guy. He never led anyone on and never made anyone believe anything he didn't mean. So he couldn't exactly leave this situation like this, right? This was like a chess game, and the girl could not win.

Getting up from his chair and collecting his belongings, he walked to the group. Looking straight into the girls boring and smug gray eyes, he slowly reached into his pocket, sticking the paper right in-between her pushed-up breasts.

"Good luck with your hunt." He whispered and with a wink, he was out.

Straightforward, right?

Hey, are you busy?

Five seconds to type. One to send.

A minute until the answer came and twenty seconds trying to unlock his phone. Not at all! Wanna meet?

His answer was instantaneous.

I would love to! Bars and Noble at 5th?

Anxiously waiting for the answer, Daniel didn't even notice the sea of people swarming through him.

Perfect! See you there in 15!

And he could do nothing but smile.

See you there Summer.

I just love Daniel. Curious fact: Daniel is actually inspired on two friends of mine! :D

Hey, which character is your favorite? Daniel with his rants? Mackenzie with her sass? Maybe Summer and her lovable laugh? Or Henri with... well, just being Henri?
