MACKENZIE X DANIEL
They shook. They jerked. They butt-headed. And finally, they landed. The last five minutes of the flight were troublesome, but they all ended safely on the ground. Well, almost safely. Mackenzie was pretty sure her hand was broken from how hard Henri was holding it. And don't even get me started on how Daniel could barely breathe, suffocated from the pressure of Summer's arms around his neck.
The last twenty minutes of the flight were insane. They wouldn't shut up. Summer was laughing louder than ever and Mackenzie was gesticulating more than usual. Daniel was incredibly quiet and Henri was making too much noise. In their own way—each one of them wanted to be remembered. They wanted to be unforgettable.
But what was the point of it? What was the point of keeping them in mind, when they wouldn't be in sight? What was the point of reminiscing what could've been and never actually were? With a mind full of question and not enough answers, Mackenzie suddenly felt a pang of pity for Danny. This wasn't even near of what he felt. She knew it. A headache was already on its way to her brain and she's been at it for about five minutes.
Green eyes met blue ones and suddenly, there was something there. He nodded. She walked to him. Summer had gone to the bathroom and Henri was, once again, on a coffee quest. Maybe this was the opportunity they needed. Just the two of them, ready to pour out some true words and fake colors.
Mackenzie never thought about these questions. And Daniel never knew the answers. Except at that moment. At that smelly airport, waiting for the baggage mat to actually start working, sitting down next to each other in a sudden quietness. It was cool. It was good. It was tense. Nobody knew who was going to speak first. It was anxious. They didn't know who was going to give in first. And it was unexpected. Daniel sighed and turned to Mackenzie. But Mackenzie was the one to speak first. In a way, both of them gave up. Both of them were the bigger person.
"How do you do it?" was what she asked.
"I put it down." was the answer. And somehow, that was more than enough. She understood. Somewhat.
Daniel Webber was a genius. He put it down. He put everything down. His words, his mind, his heart. His walls. There was a block on her mind and she knew it. There are blocks in everyone's mind. All you got to do is... take. Them. Down. That's why he carried that notebook. He wrote everything down, just to get it out of his mind.
"And you put it down also."
Daniel reached inside her backpack to get her sketch book. He opened it. He looked through it. Not for a moment had Mac felt uncomfortable. She would usually shy away, but he was trying to prove a point. He had a reason.
For each drawing and each random shape in her book, he would ask; what is that. Mackenzie then would start to explain when and where she was when she drew it. Slowly, but surely, she started to understand. Every now and then you had to let it out. The thoughts, the memories, the nightmares. It all had to get out or else everybody would go insane. She drew. Daniel ranted. Summer smiled. And Henri wrote. They all had an escape plan, and it worked very well.
"Thanks Daniel." Mackenzie said and smiled.
He smiled back. "My pleasure." And it was indeed. It was good to finally be recognized. This wasn't the first time he was praised for his intelligence and thoughts. But somehow, this seemed the truer one. "It was really nice meeting you guys."
No one expected Daniel Webber to be the one starting small chat. Yet still, he did, and Mackenzie Maine couldn't let a chance like that pass.
"Yeah. It's been quite some time since I met cool people like you guys," She said smiling at the fond memory of Henri falling at her feet five hours ago. "What do you think will happen now?"
"Whatever we want to." was his answer, and Mac knew better than to just leave it at that.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean exactly that. Whatever we want will happen. This is where our free will comes in handy, you know? For example, you gave Henri your number, which means you want him to call you. It means you still want the boy in your life." his eyes shifted to where Henri and Summer were somehow talking through mimics. "She gave me her number and I gave her mine. I want to keep in touch. I want to see her again. Even though I'll be in New York and she will be in Philly. We'll make it work. I can't step out of this mess, not right now. Not when it's getting interesting."
Mackenzie let out a little chuckle at that.
"And from the looks of it, neither can you."
With his head, Dan subtly pointed to Henri, who had now long forgotten about Summer's mimics and stared at her with the attention of a hawk. His eyes were glued to her, and when he finally realized she was staring back, he smiled, and his dimples came out to say hello. Or better yet, HI.
