DANIEL X SUMMER
All in all, it was a good night. Everything happened like it was supposed to happen and this was just the assurance that both of them needed. Now both of them knew. They were certain now that they had met for a reason, and that none of them was going to run.
Summer Hills had poured her heart out for Daniel Webber. She told him about the rejection in High School. She told him about her mothers and she told him about her apprehension. And then it was his turn. His turn to tell her that his mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer. His turn to tell her about his fear of being forgotten and his apprehension.
She felt like Danny had just punched her in the face. She felt stupid, really. Ignorant, even. Her eyes were always open to the world. She had always observed a lot, especially when it came to people's feelings towards her. Mostly, she always saw curiosity in their eyes. There were always that one or two with disgust, but the rest was all curiosity or indifference. Still, what did the real damage on her was her imagination. The expectation of an unexpected future. Nothings kills a man faster than his own head. But in this case, she was already dead.
His mother had Alzheimer. She would forget everything, one day. It would be harsh and it would be cruel. Her imagination blinded her so much to the world, that she completely forgot to weight the odds. While she was winning about having two lovely and kind mothers; two woman who were very healthy and very happy, Danny's mom was smiling and telling him everything would be okay. Because as she told him, she would never forget him. She could never.
This was the biggest reality check she'd ever had. And it was for Danny, too. He was able to catch a glimpse of what it was inside Summer's head. He had a chance to really see her and to understand why she was what she was. He loved each and every second.
No problem is bigger than the other. No problem can be measured in a scale of 'worse'. It all depends on the person. For some—the more optimistic people—problems are just an obstacle, something to reach a temporary Eden. For others—the pessimistic people—it is the end of the world. It is capable of stoping them. But for people like Danny—and maybe now Summer—it was just part of life. It was routine. Because without problems, we wouldn't know what is good. Without problems, we wouldn't learn to live. Everything would just be the same and that thought alone is awful.
He completely understood her fear of rejection. He knew how people could be when facing the different of what they are used to. Homophobia is something that some people dealt with in their daily life and it was not okay. But the prejudice against the homosexual was just a trigger to a wider problem, the one that affects all of us; the fact that the world is constantly at war. People are never satisfied and that will always cause more and more problems. Is almost like a constant Civil War against yourself.
The satisfaction that you manage to reach at some point in your life will soon fade and you'll face that feeling of futility again; otioseness, even. And the search for satisfaction will only lead to more self-destruction. That's why Danny is always thinking. He is always busy, for that's the only way he won't reach the inutility stage of life.
So he understood, really he did. But he just wished Summer would understand too, because once you really get what's going on, you'll free yourself to many possibilities. And she was trying, he could see that. She was trying to understand him and all that he carried with him, but it was too much to try and get it at once. She needed to learn the baby steps. And he would gladly teach her.
"You've got to take it easy, Sum." he said. "You are trying to understand it all at once and that's too much, even for me. You have to slow down, and enjoy every single moment. With your mothers, with your friends... with me."
And in that same night–that dark and cold night in which she was hugging Daniel Webber and to be completely honest, was enjoying it very much, she finally understood. She knew now that her own fears were getting in the way of the real world. She knew now that even though she wanted everyone to accept her and her family, it would never happen. And not because her mothers loved each other, but because never, in the course of registered history and tales, have society accepted one another. That's just how it works, and the best thing she could do was smooth down the impact. Not fight. Not cry and not scream. Just go with it.
She would do it. Summer would learn to accept critics and compliments and she wouldn't take them to the heart, because the only opinion that mattered was the one from people whom she loved and loved her in return. And those people, people like Danny, her mothers and her family—even her aunt—would always have her back.
And she would always have theirs.
