Prologue
To say I hit the ground running would be a lie. A more accurate description would be that I landed on the ground on my hands and knees and then started running, not bothering to even brush the dirt off myself. I knew the police were chasing me, though they had the most advanced tech and probably couldn't be seen or heard in their pursuit. I had no idea whether I was close to being caught or not.
I barreled as fast as I could between trees, dodging branches that appeared in front of me a second before I hit them. I could hear my irregular breathing and felt my heart pounding in my chest. I knew the forest very well, possibly better than those pursuing me, but again, they had tech and could track my heat, my movement, and my sensor.
My sensor!
I ripped the chain from my neck and flung it to my right. I veered away from it.
Now to get rid of the heat and movement. I knew of a stream that was pretty close to where I was and I headed toward it.
