I bet she's funnier than me. I bet she's knows more about him than I could ever know. I bet he loves her.
Amber frantically paced the length of the rooftop, a light wind caressing her tresses as the sun set. It was 7 pm, and she knew she was a little early. But this time gave her a chance to collect her thoughts and rehearse what to say. It wasn't that she was getting a bad vibe from Alex. In fact, it was the opposite that was driving her crazy. She was too nice, too pretty, too similar to Dylan. Hell, Alex even said "She's perfect." What in the bloody hell does that mean? Surely she didn't mean Amber, basic wavy brown hair and no unique thing about her except a habit of worrying herself to death. And what about the police? That intimidating neighbor banging on Alex's door?
"I bet Amber could worry about any other guy in the world, but she's worrying about me. I bet I love her. I bet I owe her a lot of explaining." his low voice interrupted. Bollocks. She was talking out loud again. Amber remained facing the city skyline and let Dylan walk up next to her. She stayed silent and Dylan took that as the "Go ahead."
"7 years old, mother died. This little boy jumps in front of his little brother and takes a right hook. 12 years old, starts hiding himself and his little brother at his best friend's apartment. 17 years old, works to give beer to his father. I guess the dad figured no money, no way out."
"Why didn't you just go to the police? Or run away?" Amber whispered, tears running down her face, matching Dylan's already tear stained cheeks.
"And risk me being separated from Austin, only to be shoved into a foster family? I'm waiting till I turn 18, so I can get full custody. I've been saving. I should have enough to hire a lawyer by my birthday."
"That man..." Amber choked.
"My father." Dylan confirmed it with a grim smile and curt nod. The pair stood in silence watching the sunlight slip away, letting darkness overcome the sky.
"It felt like this," Dylan whispered. "darkness just overtaking my life." Then he looked at Amber and continued, gently intertwining his fingers with hers and spoke gently into her ear.
"But I found out that in the night, there are stars."
