Skylar's POV
"Hey Sky, get up." I opened my eyes slightly, the first light of dawn filtering through my window. Jackson's overly excited face was peaking through my door, two mugs of coffee in his hands. I gave him a soft smile as I sat up, gladly accepting the mug from him. The smooth taste of sugar and cream flooded my mouth as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in.
"I really don't understand how you drink that stuff. It's hardly even coffee anymore." Jackson let out a small laugh as he wrinkled his nose up at my preferred drink of choice. A smile etched itself on his face, and I felt my heart do its familiar little flop at it. Jax and I had never been a thing, but he was one of a few choice males that I had let myself become this close with. He was kind, and strong, determined without being rash. I had always felt this connection with him, and I was harshly disappointed that we hadn't been mates. Regardless, my affection for him remained professional... and I had to try hard at times.
"What's so important that I had to be up this morning?" I stretched my legs out under the covers, wriggling my toes against his leg and took another sip of coffee. I tried to clear my mind of how I felt toward him, much like I always had. He is my beta, and I have to treat him as such.
"You have a meeting with the Elders at 9, and I thought that you would want to up and showered before. We have some serious shit to talk about..." He pushed my feet away, his face suddenly serious and hardened. "Skylar, I don't think you were told everything about the attack. You were missing and I think things got missed, and everyone was just relieved to see you, but..." Jackson stared off, taking a long sip of his coffee to avoid the conversation. I gave him a pointed look that if he didn't continue, I'd march right down to the Elders in my t-shirt and shorts and demand the information. "Not everyone came back from the attack. Obviously, we gathered our fallen, but there were those that we presume to have been taken. We have no idea if they're still alive or not, but we're hoping for the best."
I lunged at my old friend, his coffee flying from his grasp as it spilled all over the bed. "No one thought to fucking tell me! You're my fucking beta Jax, act like it. I should have known this information the second I got back. You should've updated me on EVERYTHING. If this happens again I'm going to have to banished for treason, you hear me?" My hand was around his throat, and an animalistic growl rumbled deep in my chest.
"Sky, we had just gotten you back a- and after Lane, we were all just so worried. C'mon you can't be serious." He tried to smile, but my grip only tightened. I was seeing red, anger and heat coursing through my body. I shoved him harshly, his body tumbling off the end of the bed, and I heard him choke out his breath as he tried to regain it. I stood over him, all the happiness and affection I had just associated with him gone.
"I'm very serious Jackson. If it happens again, I will need to find a new beta. Now get out, I'll meet you downstairs to head to the meeting." I walked to the bathroom, picking up the mug I had knocked out of his hands and setting it on the nightstand. I'd have to clean my blankets and floor after the meeting, we were hunters but we didn't live like wolves.
---------------
I walked into the kitchen, freshly showered, dressed, and hungry. Jackson was sitting at the bar area, a fresh mug of coffee protected in his hands. He met my eyes and gave a nod, acknowledging his mistake earlier. I gave him a soft smile before grabbing cereal from the cupboard and pouring myself a bowl. I grabbed the milk, and I saw Jackson open his mouth to speak, but my mother walked into the kitchen, my father in his chair behind her.
