Lee was first to sound the alarm.
Apparently, he and Mr Emerson were supposed to go and collect fire wood, but when Lee went to Mr Emerson's tent, he wasn't there.
Everyone had gathered in the middle of camp, smoke rising from the once lit campfire. Arguments filled the air as everyone came up with reasons on why they thought the camp director was missing.
I sat myself down on a log and thought. Had Mr Emerson gone back to his ranch or had something bad happened to him?
After a few more minutes of arguments and thinking, a voice rose above all the rest.
"Can everyone just shut up for one minute!" I looked over to where the voice had come from and saw Nick standing on a log. I smiled as everyone else quietened down to hear what he was saying.
"You all need to calm down, we'll be fine." Nick continued as everyone stared back at him. "Mr Emerson has probably gone to get more supplies, I'm sure he'll be back soon."
Relief suddenly swept through the camp like a wave. I'm sure everyone was thinking that bad things could have happened to our camp director, but now Nick had given us all a sense of hope.
I just hoped he was right.
The day dragged on as normal. Someone had the audacity to actually make breakfast, which I was very thankful for. At least we had enough food.
Everyone milled around the camp, quietly chatting amongst themselves or sitting down peacefully. Nick and I went back to our tent, where we found Ashley asleep. Michael was off playing a card game with some others.
"So what do you actually think happened to the camp director?" I asked him as he pulled me close under our sleeping bags.
"Not sure. I just don't think he would disappear without telling anybody. Wouldn't he think that we would get worried?" He responded quietly. I nodded before wrapping my hands around his waist.
Nick lent down and pressed his lips softly to mine, before snaking his arms around me and holding me tight. "I promise I won't let anything happen to us."
"I know." I said, flashing him a smile, but before I could continue, yells erupted from outside.
We quickly jumped up and ran to where the yelling was coming from. Someone could be hurt.
Fortunately, I was wrong. The yelling was coming from Lee, who was shouting at this other kid.
"Why would you use the rest of it? Don't you think it would have been smart to actually tell someone?" Lee said as the other kid glanced at the now lit campfire.
"I'm sorry, I thought we had heaps left!" He spat back to him. Before things could escalate, Nick grabbed hold of Lee's wrist and pulled him towards us.
"What's going on?" Nick asked heavily as Lee fumed. "It's Zack." He replied hotly. "He's used the last of the firewood."
"And?" Nick asked quizzically.
"And," Lee said seriously. "It means someone's gonna have to go out into the woods and get more."
