I watched Lucy's shoulders shake as she walked away. Does she really think that whatever was in the woods was the Wendigo?
I turned and faced Nick, who had gone as white as a ghost. "Nick? Are you alright?" I asked as I placed my hand on his shoulder.
He quickly looked me dead in the eye, fear evident in his pupils. "What's wrong?" I said worriedly.
Suddenly, he pulled me into a hug. I grabbed onto his shoulders and pushed him away. "Nick! Seriously, your freaking me out!" I said before quickly kissing him on the lips. "Tell me what's wrong."
Nick glanced at Sam, who got the message that we wanted to be alone. Once Sam had left, Nick finally spoke. "You know how I did some research on the Wendigo?" He asked me quietly. I nodded for him to continue.
"Well, the websites described what the Wendigo acted like." His fingers stroked the side of my cheek, as if he was worried I'd get scared.
"Nick, I promise you that I won't be afraid. I just need things to start making sense!" I said, frustrated at Nick as well as myself.
"OK, fine." He said. "Apparently, the Wendigo likes to pick groups off, one by one. It's a cannibal, so it eats humans, but it sleeps for all of winter. When it wakes up, it's really hungry." The realization hit me like a brick.
Winter had just finished.
What if the Wendigo had just woken up and was hungry? That's assuming that it was actually real.
"Anything else you want to tell me?" I asked quietly. Nick nodded before continuing.
"Supposedly, they skin their victims alive, eat the flesh and hang the skin near their cave as a warning. Also, they can mimic human voices to trick other humans." I nodded as if this was all starting to make sense.
"Lucy said that they heard a voice telling them where the camp was. God, I'm actually starting to think that this is real." I said hurriedly.
Then I started to walk off in the direction of the other campers, but Nick quickly grabbed my wrist. "Where are you going?" He asked.
"I'm going to tell the others about the Wendigo." I replied. "Why?"
Nick had a terrified gaze on his face before he spoke. "We can't do that! They'll freak out and the last thing we need is crazy people running around the camp."
Nick pulled me in for another hug, but this time, I didn't pull away. He rubbed his smooth hands along my back as I murmured into his shoulder.
"What if we never get out of Woodlands State Forest?" I asked sadly as Nick kissed my cheek.
"We'll get out, Becky." He replied as I glanced up and saw the colors that decorated the sky. The sun was rising.
"I promise."
