Thirteen – Into the fire
"I can't believe he actually took the job back"
"I think you're taking this whole thing a little out of proportion"
Em stood by a wall at the very edge of the crowd, away from where the room was mostly packed. Her arms were behind her, palms resting on the cool surface she was leaning on. The girl didn't look directly at her companion for more than a few seconds. He, however, watched her every movement. After a short pause, Monster decided to speak again.
"Em, isn't it a good thing that Marcus is back in the game? It will be easier on us. You'll get more rest. More time with Elise and Andrea. I can work at the shop a lot more too, if this stays the way it is"
"He should have stayed away" Em said quietly. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough for Monster not to hear her mumble.
"He's one of your oldest friends." The blue haired boy frowned in confusion, gesturing to himself. "Our oldest friend. What's gotten into you?"
"He had a way out, and he took it. And he was happy. Now he's throwing all that away. He had a choice. We don't"
"Are you...jealous?" Monster asked, tilting his head and cocking a brow. "Wait...now I get it"
"You don't get shit, Monster"
"I've known you longer than anything, Em. And I know what this is about. You're jealous at the fact he had a way out of being a Hunter, and now you're pissed with him for throwing away the perfect life for another shot at this hell"
Em stayed silent. Though now she was staring Monster down. Her glare dangerous and frost laden.
"That's it, isn't it" Monster crossed his arms. "God you must feel confused..."
"Just shut up"
"You don't think I'm conflicted too? It's amazing to have Marcus back. But I too don't want him to end up having his leg or other arm torn off. We just have to trust in his decision."
Em thought for a moment. Her gaze softened, as it moved from the boy down to the floor at his shoes.
"Hey..." Monster smiled. He edged closer and put his arms around her neck. Em's face fell onto his shoulder, resting on the jacket with her cheek. "Nothing bad is going to happen. As he said, you're not alone, you never were."
"I don't want him to die"
Monster moved away and held her face in his palms, looking into her grey-blue eyes with his own dark orbs. "Neither do I. But it won't happen, okay? Now let's snoop. We have a job to do remember?"
"Yes." Em wiped the corner of her eye with the heel of her hand. "Yes let's go."
"So where do we start?" Monster turned to face the crowd and the middle of the room. "Kramer didn't exactly give us very clear instructions"
"Because he was sure we were smart enough to figure it out ourselves."
"Well..." Monster took a look around, brushing a few bangs from his face. The rest were brushed back and tied into the pony tail he was still wearing. "We're not going to find much incriminating evidence in here, maybe we should find a way inside the rest of the building. There are bound to be offices and other important things in here."
