Seven – Investigation

"Is this why that guy from S2 was prowling around here the other night?"

The sun was setting. Walking through the corridors closest to the large windows on the side of the tall building allowed a breath taking view. At least it would have been breath taking if the heavy black storm clouds hadn't rolled in that evening. The dark giants floated sluggishly though the darkening sky as though they refused to be moved by the wind. Any minute now the downpour would come. Thunder could already be heard in the near distance cracking and shaking the horizon.

"What do you mean?"

Monster gnawed on the candy cane, which was growing smaller with every time he put it to his mouth. He swallowed before speaking again.

"Remember when we snuck out to talk to Elise in the broom cupboard, about Marcus being invited back?"

"Yes?"

"We saw a dude from Sector Two skulking around here. Could he have been here to let Kramer know about that new dimension?"

"I wouldn't know, but it does make sense if he was" Em looked past her companion to glance out of the window. "Do you think its gonna rain?"

"Like a bitch. I hope we don't have to go out tonight. If theres something harder than hunting demons in the dark, its hunting them in the dark while getting soaked from head to toe"

"It might be fun." Em smiled. They finally reached the end of the hall to a door. "I like the rain"

"I don't." Monster held the wooden door open by its brass handle and waited for the girl to pass through before him. "Gets my tail wet. And muddy."

"There's nothing a good bath can't fix" Em laughed moving away and twisted down the next hallway behind the door they walked through. She turned over her shoulder. Monster rolled his eyes. Their childish bickering and discussion continued until they were standing at the door to Kramer's office. Em thought back to the most recent conversation she had with the man. It wasn't at all pleasant, from what she could remember. She owed him an apology. Many people close to them didn't know just how far the relationship between the founder of KO and his most valuable Hunter ran. It was nothing of the romantic sort, goodness no. After finding her, her

origins unknown, Kramer took Em under his wing. Became a father figure. It was no surprise that Elise and Em were such close friends, being raised one way or another under the same roof, even if their upbringings were differed slightly. Though the whole story is a story for another time. Em didn't like to talk about her past. The people that knew this piece of her were as close as her own skin. Monster, Andrea, Marcus and the Kramer family. People she trusted and kept with her. She needed to brush up her act, if that was what Aaron Kramer asked of her. It was the least she could do in return. Em's train of thought was derailed as she was brought back to reality when Monster rapped his knukles over the door they were waiting outside. No answer.

"Maybe he's out"

"Try again" Em told him. Monster did so, and the outcome didn't change. Em put her hand on the handle and pushed the door open, stepping inside. "We knock-" her sentence trailed off as she caught sight inside the room. It was empty. Kramer wasn't present.

"He's not here." Monster leaned in to take a quick gander. "See? Told you"

"That's weird" Em walked into the space. She noticed the reports stacked in the middle of the man's workspace. She guessed these were the ones Elise was talking about. It wouldn't hurt to take a look at them herself, at least in Em's head. The girl picked up the stash and brought it up. Her blue eyes skimmed the page for any familiar information she already knew. Nope, not the right report. Em took the pages she wasn't interested in and set them back down where she found them before continuing with the next. This one caught her attention. She read the typewritten words slower. Monster scratched the back of his head wandering into the room and looking around. His hand was set on the belt around his waist holding the gun.
