Maggie Evans cast a gloomy look on her tired face.
"Pops, you know what I hate is you telling me what I don't want to hear. It scares me".
"You don't think that I purposefully left Collinwood Manor without seeing things. I did; I was a man who had a commission. And Roger Collins paid me a lot of money for his portrait. That part was good; that was something to be proud of; the other part of the job was terrible".
"How terrible?", Maggie asked.
"Shadows all over the Drawing Room. Noises in rooms. The cold. It's not that warm in Bangor, Maine; it's not that warm all year round due to the fact that Collinsport is a fishing village. The cannery takes up a lot of time away from men. Bill Malloy knew that".
"And now?".
"There's a lot of stories Maggie. Stories that I won't mention".
"What kind of stories?", Maggie asked.
"That the place is haunted by werewolves, and ghosts. And vampires".
"Now you're joking".
"If I was Maggie, then we'd be rich. But we're not".
"And what about the framed pictures on the spidery walls?".
"Oh, yes. Quentin Collins. And Jeremiah Collins. And Angelique Brouchard. And others. I prefer my artistic work then talking about ghosts of the past".
"And what do we do? I have work to do soon".
"Soon we'll be here to have dinner. It's not fun to deal with the Collins and Stoddard families all of the time".
"I suppose so, Pops. Now, I'll go back to work. Thanks for the coffee. I'll come home by six o'clock. Good bye!".
"Good bye!", Sam Evans kissed her.
And watched her leave the front door.
