Prologue

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The soft, melodic voice of my mother drifted into her ears, slowly lulling her to sleep.  The gentle rocking of the chair supported the soft call of sleep.  But, no matter how tired I felt, I wanted to hear my mother’s story.  The story with the angels who battled with the devil.  The story where good triumphed over evil.
            “God had many angels, all of which loved Him dearly, except for one angel, Lucifer.  Lucifer did not like all of the attention and love God received, and decided to gather other angels with the same thoughts to start a rebellion.  A battle broke out in the heavens, long and brutal.  The angels of God fought relentlessly against Lucifer, finally sending him into the depths of Hell.  After this battle, God realized that his angels were strong but caring warriors, and once humans were created, He assigned each of them a human to guard with their life, in case Lucifer had any intentions of returning for revenge,” my mother retold the story, her voice sweetly describing each detail.
            “Mother, are guardian angels real?” I innocently questioned, my wide eyes set upon my mother’s delicate face.
            “Of course they are, darling.  There is one in you, one in me, one in everyone.  Our guardian angel is always with us,” my mother replied in a gentle tone.
            Nonetheless, I was quite the disbeliever.  I would not believe in something unless I could see it and touch it.  “But, Mother, I cannot see my angel.  Did it leave?  Will it come back?  Or is it scared and does not want to show me its face?” I inquired further.  Lifting my small head, my eyes darted side from side, scanning the room for the wisp of a feather, the glow of a halo.
            My mother laughed, a light, jingly laugh, like wind blowing through wind chimes.  “No, not at all, my dear.  Your guardian is fearless, and it will never, under no circumstances, leave your side.  Guardian angels exist to watch over us, to make sure that the devil will not do any harm.  Just wait, Leena, in time, your guardian will reveal itself to you, in a time when you need it most.  Now enough questions, child.  You must sleep.  Do not forget to recite your prayers.”  My mother carried my squirming body into bed and tucked the covers tightly around me.
            “Good night, Mother,” I whispered, as my body relaxed and my eyes slowly began to flutter closed.
            “Good night, Leena.  I love you… so much,” my mother tenderly kissed my forehead, then left the room and slowly shut the door.
            Before being captive to the clutches of slumber, I recited a prayer in my head.
            Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love, commits me here.  Ever this day, be at my side, to light and guard, rule and guide…
