 Chapter Two

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            I stared back in awe.  Guardian angel?  It wasn’t true, it couldn’t be true.  Guardian angels weren’t real, they were just stories made up to make children feel safer, to make them think that the monsters under their beds wouldn’t hurt them.  The “angel” looked at me intently, and her expression expressed confusion.
            “What is the matter?  You act as if you have never laid eyes on an angel before,” Luna remarked, a somewhat concerned look on her face.
            “Funny thing, I haven’t.  But you’re not real.  I’m just dreaming.  I can wake up right now and find out this is all a dream,” I said, more to myself rather than the imaginary creature in front of me.  I pinched myself, several times, until the crescent of red on my arm turned purple, and I could feel tears burning behind my eyelids.
Luna gently lifted my fingers away from my forearm and said, “Well, there is no need for you to hurt yourself and I most likely cannot protect you from that kind of harm, Leena.”
“How do you know my name?” I asked, slightly alarmed.  Luna smiled warmly.
“I’ve been with you your whole life, Leena.  I have been by your side, protected you, watched over you,” Luna replied.  Instead of safety and comfort, I felt a wave of violation sweep over me.  It’s okay when people tell you that someone’s watching over you as a child, but once you reach a certain age it starts to have a whole new meaning.
“Um, yea so about that, I have to go to the supermarket, so it was nice meeting you!” I regained my composure and swiftly left the ally, praying that Luna would not follow, but to no prevail.
“Oh, then I shall accompany you to your destination,” Luna said once she caught up with me.  I tried to conceal a gasp of exasperation as I allowed Luna to follow.
“So, explain this to me.  Guardian angels are real, right?” I inquired.
“Yes, very much so,” Luna replied.  I barely managed to contain the jumbled thoughts in my head.
“Meaning that, there are more of you?”
“Indeed, there is a guardian for each human, some just have not revealed themselves to their human,” Luna responded, her calm manner unwavering.  I took a moment to organize my thoughts.  Guardian angels were real, and mine revealed herself to me.  She saved me from that gang, and most likely with the sword in her hand…
“Wait, before, you had a sword in your hand.  You must have used it to defend me from those boys before, yet there wasn’t a scratch,” I observed, confusion flooding over me once again.
“Oh, my sword does not harm humans, you see, but rather the evil within them.  As I said before, each human has a guardian, but not all guardians are disciples of God.  The angels of Lucifer, known as Dark angels, take advantage of humans with hearts tainted with greed, hatred, and grief, and use the humans as their puppets.  Made from Grace, my sword is one of the only weapons that can obliterate Dark angels and exorcise the evil within the human they possess,” Luna explained quite matter-of-factly.
“Grace…?” I questioned, my face expressing utter bewilderment.
“Grace is made from God’s power itself.  Powerful enough to wipe out an entire colony of Dark angels, if the user is strong enough to wield it.”  I jammed the new information into my mind, but I noticed odd glances directed at me.
Supposing they were alarmed by Luna’s outdated clothing, I whispered, “Luna, I suggest we find you a new change of clothes.  Your current outfit is attracting quite a lot of attention.”
“Oh, I forgot to mention.  A guardian is only visible to its human, other guardians, and others who have seen their guardians.  I do not see any guardians anywhere, so the people that you are referring to most likely cannot see me,” Luna clarified, a sheepish look on her face.
“So you mean that it looks like I’m having a conversation with myself to all of these people!?” I exclaimed, a little too loudly.  Some pedestrians stopped to stare at me in fear, parents pulling their children closer toward them.  I quickly pulled on my hood and stared down, hiding my humiliated face.
“Well, yes, I suppose so,” Luna answered, her devious little grin growing on her face.
“You know, I don’t think I need anything from the market anymore.  I’m just going to head back to school,” I mumbled under my breath, loud enough for Luna and Luna only to hear.
“You’re not going anywhere!  I must show you the Guardian’s sanctuary, Gabriel will be delighted to meet you,” Luna informed me, and before I could object, grabbed me around my waist, unfolded her wings and soared through the skies.
