Chapter Six

A battle cry echoed overhead, causing Pas, Luna, and I to look up. Two figures were descending, and once they were close to the ground, we recognized two more Dark Angels in our midst.
“Just as I finished cleaning my sword,” Luna sighed, and unsheathed it once more. Pas prepared another arrow on his bow, ready to fire.
Unleashing the arrow, one of the Angels went down, and the other angrily darted toward us to avenge its companion. Luna charged at the Angel, her sword poised readily at her waist. However, the Dark Angel did not seem to be fazed one bit. As if by impulse, the Angel drew out a rugged dagger, and despite its fragile appearance, it blocked the swing of Luna’s sword.
Chuckling mischievously, the Angel threw Luna back with ease. She took a moment to recover, then resumed her previous battle stance.
“Sorry to ruin the fun, Guardians, but I am much stronger than the Angel that you fought before. Try to attack me? I’ll be surprised if I even get a scratch.” and with that, he attacked Luna once more. I still stood in the trees, motionless as I was watching Luna battle the strong Dark Angel. Pas was just as still as I, but swiftly jumped into the fight to assist Luna. Left by my lonesome, I felt more vulnerable than ever.
“Luna…” I managed to muster for no apparent reason. She swung her sword expertly at the Dark Angel, each move graceful yet powerful. She looked heroic, fighting as if to guard my life, as if she actually cared about me…
“Leena! What are you still doing here? Run and get the Ordinary, you idiot!” Luna shouted over her shoulder.
Scratch that thought.
Following Luna’s instructions, I ran through the trees and undergrowth, looking for a defenseless human like me. My ears strained for a small cry for help, a tiny call, but the only sounds that filled my ears were the battle between Luna and Pas versus the Dark Angel.
Finally, after what seemed like hours of searching, I found a boy, who seemed too young to be exposed to the Guardians, maybe around Angel’s age. He was kneeling over a figure, dressed in old-fashioned armor with some weapon tucked under its arm. As I stepped closer, I recognized the body of a dead Guardian, but also the Dark Angel that Pas shot before. The creature stood towering over the boy, who was trembling, from fear or pain, I did not know.
“Come join us, Alexander, come to the Dark Side. Lord Lucifer will win the war against the Guardians, and we shall reign over the pitiful human race,” the Angel extended a thin, clawed hand. So this was how the Dark Angels convinced humans to join their side. They waited until their Guardian was dead so they could be vulnerable, then the Dark Angel would swoop in and try to convert the human. A terrible tactic, but also quite brilliant. As I continued to watch the scene, I contemplated my plan of attack on the Dark Angel.
“N-no…” the boy stammered, “My Guardian may be dead, but I will stay and fight with the Guardians ‘til my last breath.” For a boy, he seemed well versed.
A sadistic smile spread across the Angel’s face. “Wrong answer,” it simply stated, then quickly brought down its clawed hand on the boy. I had no time to think, so I just jumped.
I threw all my weight against the Angel, and we both slammed into a nearby tree. The Ordinary sat with a surprised face, his arm still cradling the Guardian’s head in his thin arms.
Turning back for a split second, I yelled, “Don’t just sit there! Run, you idiot!” That saying sounded familiar. The boy stood up, but merely hovered over the Guardian’s body. Knowing that he did not want to leave, I raised my fists ready to protect the boy in place of the Guardian.
