A glass of sweet tea sat on the tile covered island, a slice of country apple pie beside it. The pie had a heavenly cinnamon and apple smell wafting off of it. A phone started to ring on the island, playing a quiet combination of guitar and banjo. A tan paw reached out and grabbed it. The lynx looked down at the screen to see who was calling before answering. A smooth deep voice echoed from the phone. "Hey hun, How are you doin'?" The lynx paused for a moment before answering.
"I'm doing ok Griff. How are you?" The voice hesitated thoughtfully before speaking again. "I know that tone sweetheart," Griff's voice took on a playful tone. "You aren't fibbin' to me are you Amy?" Amy chuckled. The orange tiger always seemed to know when she was lying. "Alright, you caught me. I'm not doing so great." The replying voice was gentle and comforting. "You had another nightmare didn't you?" Amy nodded and then, realizing he wasn't actually there, answered. "Yep, and this one was pretty bad, I think I went borderline panic attack." "You poor thing you." Amy heard Griff say quietly, so quietly she was sure she wasn't supposed to hear it.
The phone went quiet for a few moments before she broke the silence. "How did you think to call me?" Griff's chuckled and answered, saying, "You aren't exactly a ninja hun. I saw that you were online. Your profile lit up bright green and a notification popped up on my phone that you were active. I knew if you were online this late you probably were having trouble sleeping." Amy paused, taking a quick swig of sweet tea and a small bite of apple pie. She wasn't sure what to say, so she didn't say anything for a moment, letting silence fall. She finally put the phone up against her ear again. "Thank you for calling Griff. It really helps me. I enjoy talking, but I need to go. I'm gonna try and get some more sleep."
"Okay Amy. Just call me again if you have another nightmare. You know I'll always answer." Amy waited a second to make sure he was done then hung up and set the phone face-down on the island. She drained the rest of her tea and quickly downed the delicious pie. She let out a small happy sigh. There was nothing quite like country-made apple pie. She laid the dishes into the full sink and started to head back to the bathroom. She entered and shut the door. She lived by herself and out in the country, the nearest neighbor a few miles away. At least she wouldn't have to worry about disturbing anyone else.
