(Not Edited.)Why Me? . . .
"Nope, Kayla," Shay said walking down her driveway and towards my car. "It's my week to sit in the front."
"I know," Kayla said and smiled. "Just keeping it warm for you." She looked over at me and rolled her eyes before getting out.
"That is so nice of you," Shay said and flopped down in the seat next to me.
Kayla got in the back, shaking her head while putting on her seatbelt.
I pulled away from Shay's house and headed towards our school.
"Kayla," Shay asked in a curious voice. "Why do you always put on your seatbelt?"
" . . . Because it's the law . . .?"
"Yeah, I know," Shay said, turning around in her seat to look at Kayla. "But don't you just want to live a little and NOT wear it this one time?"
" . . . Not really," Kayla said, throwing Shay a crazy look.
"Oh," Shay said, turning around and plopping back in the seat. She started fumbling with my radio until she had Britney Spears' Till the World Ends playing loudly through my car. "I love this song," she yelled turning it up louder.
" 'I can't take, can't take, can't take no more,'" Shay sang. " 'Never felt like, felt like this before. Come on get me, get me on the floor! DJ what you, what you waiting for?"
By now Kayla and I had joined in and we looked like complete idiots singing this song at the top of our lungs.
" ' Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh!'"
After 3 and a half more minutes of singing our hearts out along with Britney Spears the song ended and Shay turned down the volume as 1,2,3,4 by Plain White T's came on.
"So," Shay said turning in her seat to face me. "Did you guys hear that Kelsey and Gabe got back together?"
I shrugged nonchalantly and tried to make it seem like it didn't affect me.
Well, honestly, it didn't.
"It was about time they got back together, don't ya think," Kayla commented from the back seat.
"They almost broke their record," I said pulling into the parking lot. "How long you think it's going to last this time?"
"I give it a week," Shay said.
"3 days," Kayla mumbled making us laugh. "Seriously, though. When is the longest they stayed together?"
"Like, 3 weeks," I said and parked in our usual spot.
"My point exactly," Kayla said and grabbed her things. "I think it's a pattern of three. Next time it's most likely gonna be 3 hours." She got out and just as I was about to do the same Shay grabbed my arm.
"We have to help her get with Jason," she said quietly.
"You sure you wanna play Miss Match Maker," I asked and watched her pull down the sun visor and look herself in the mirror.
"You saying it's a bad idea to butt-in," she asked, pulling out her makeup pouch and leafing around.
"We'll... Yeah," I said and nodded. "What if he has something planned?
"You're right," she agreed, pulling out some lip gloss. "Let's just see what he has up his sleeve. You know we have to give him the best friend talk, right?"
"Best friend talk," I repeated confused, watching her apply the lip gloss.
She smacked her lips before saying, "You have a lot to learn." She ruffled her hair and then opened the door to get out.
"What's that supposed to mean," I asked too late. "She doesn't know what she's talking about," I decided and got out as well. They were standing by my trunk and Shay was messing with Kayla's hair.
"Just let me --"
"No," Kayla said, swatting Shay's hands away. "Gosh, woman," she huffed, pulling her bag up on her shoulder. She turned to me. "What took you so long?"
"I couldn't find my phone," I said and nodded in the direction of the school. "Shall we?"
"Something's up with you two," Kayla said and narrowed her eyes at me then Shay. "I'm on to you two."
~~~~~
"I. Am. Starving," Shay said and slammed her locker shut.
"Well, hurry up then," I said and tugged on the tote bag hanging on my shoulder.
She groaned and turned in the direction of the cafeteria. She hooked her arm through mine, nearly dragging me behind her.
"Slow down, will ya," I asked almost tripping over my own two feet for the second time. "What class did Kayla have right now? Maybe we can meet her."
"Probably one of her nerdy classes," Shay said slowing down her pace just a little.
"All of her classes are nerd classes," I pointed out. "She always gets to the cafeteria when we do."
"Yeah," Shay said and nodded.
A few seconds later Kayla came barreling around the corner.
"Oh, there she is," Shay said waving to Kayla as if I didn't have eyes of my own.
"Yeah, I can see her," I said giving Shay an odd look.
Kayla sped walked down the hall and stopped in front of us. "Hey, guys. You going that way? You don't wanna go that way," she said all in one breath and shook her head.
"Well, why not," Shay asked confused. "I'm hungry."
"Let's go off campus and get something to eat, yeah," Kayla asked trying to push us the other way.
"What's down there, Kayla," I asked in an expectant tone.
"I know," Shay chimed in. "We can still leave campus but I wanna know what's down there," giving my arm a small pull.
"Fine," Kayla said and shrugged. She stepped out of our way and crossed her arms. "But don't say that I didn't warn you."
"Let's go," Shay said tugging me down the hall.
I let her drag me the short distance down the hall. We stopped at the corner and Shay went to peek her head around it but I pulled her back before she could get a good look.
"You are so obvious. Let's just pretend like we're going that way," I said and rolled my shoulders in small circles, forcing myself to look normal.
"Gotcha," Shay said and stood up straight.
We linked arms again and walked around the corner. We didn't get too far because I stopped.
It was Gabe.
I stared at the scene before me with a hurt expression. I watched as he pressed himself closer to Erica Gordon, the school's slut. She had her back against the locker and her arms wound around his neck. They were in a heated make out session and completely oblivious to the fact that the rest of the student body were watching them.
"Aw, man," Shay said and turned us around. "I should have listened to Kayla."
I wanted to curse myself.
I dreaded the reality of it all. I had fallen for him. I really should have known that stupid kiss didn't mean anything.
He played me . . . And I let him! I kissed him back when I should have just stopped him.
I know, I always ask this but . . . Why me?
