After: Chapter Eleven – First Day on the Job

7 days After

Esther Higgins was running after Deborah Fisher; Groves High School's Principal in hope to keep up with her. It was Esther's first day of work at Groves High and already she had ran late because her car wouldn't start, spilt tea on her new white blouse that her and husband had picked out together and arrived at Groves High looking like she had gone through the washing machine and come out the wrong way. She was a mess.

So because she was late, Deborah Fisher was now also late for her meetings she had booked in for today, so she was hurrying around saying things a million miles an hour while Esther followed hurriedly behind trying to keep up with everything she was saying. "It's so good to have you here, Mrs. Higgins. You know Groves High has never had a school counselor before. I'm Mrs. Fisher the school Principal." She said as she picked up some paper work from one of the desks as she kept walking her way through the office. People put their heads up from their desks as she walked through to stare at their boss, but to also stare at the new comer. Like Mrs. Fisher said, Groves High had never had a school counselor, just like Esther had never actually been an actual counselor. Esther had just graduated from College six months ago when her College professor had recommended her for this job. Esther had found it hard to find work since graduating and was thankful for the opportunity. Esther had grown up in this town her whole life; she even attended this high school when she was younger so she was thrilled to be back to help any young person in need. Esther studied Psychology in college, focusing particularly on adolescents because that's what Esther was passionate about, helping young people. "I'm so sorry that we can't stop and chat but I really am in such a rush. We hired you because, since a week ago the school had been in an uproar, staff and parents ringing up and complaining saying something must be done."

"Something must be done?" Esther asked wondering what she was referring to. Since Esther had attended this school years ago, Groves High had never gotten a single complaint. It was a school built on one of the best reputations in its area and even though it was the only high school in their small town people would move from other areas just to go to it.

"That is why you were hired Mrs. Higgins, the school board voted that we needed a school counselor to help deal with this odd... predicament."

"Predicament?" Esther asked wondering again what she was referring to. Mrs. Fisher weaved her way through the office and into what Esther guessed was the staff room where other teachers were sipping on their coffees and chatting amongst themselves. But as soon as Mrs. Fisher entered they went quiet. Mrs. Fisher grabbed her coffee off the counter on the small kitchenette they had in the room. She stopped for a brief moment to savor the taste and lean against the bench.

Esther had always thought Mrs. Fisher had a very scatterbrained personality. She remembered she had been just the same when Esther herself had attended this school. She was always hurrying about and doing something. Mrs. Fisher always wore her hair bun which was full of auburn hair that bursted from the seams making random red curls fall all around Mrs. Fisher's face. She had grey hairs that lined her scalp and wrinkles that aged her weathered skin making her look old and frail. Though her make up was pristine and so was her dress suit that seemed to be a cover up how old Mrs. Fisher really was and made everything think she was still eligible for this position. Mrs Fisher had been Groves High's principal for as long as she could remember, maybe even before that and Mrs. Fisher was proud of her work. Mrs. Fisher sighed taking her lips away from her coffee and realized Esther was still staring at her and she sighed. "Yesterday four girls in the middle of Groves High announced that they're all –" But before Mrs. Fisher could say her last word the staff room went crazy with all the staff talking about the scandal that had taken place in their own school's hallway. The room soon became too loud for anyone to hear their own thoughts yet alone anyone else's words. Mrs. Fisher grabbed Esther's arm and pulled her out of the room via another door into another hallway where all was quiet again. "The staff has been in an uproar about it too, it's all anyone has been talking about. Some even say we should expel them."
