After: Chapter thirteen – One Gone

14 days After

Mary was making her way across the quad towards Esther's office. The girls were all meant to have another group session today to talk together. Over the last week, Esther had met with each girl individually to find about each one of their back-stories leading up to them getting pregnant. Mary thought her story was pretty straightforward; just a boy and a girl who loved each other and decided to have their first time together, so she wondered what the stories of the other girls were like. Mary knew that Kayla hadn't told Esther the truth; instead she made up a lie that she had had a one-night stand with this guy she couldn't remember, so Esther wouldn't ask any questions. Mary didn't tell Esther anything about Kayla in her visit because she didn't think it was her place but she still thought Kayla ought to tell someone like Esther the truth because she knew Esther would somehow know how to help her. But Kayla didn't agree, instead she vowed never to breathe a word about what happened to anyone else ever again. So Mary wondered about the other two, she wondered about how Ronnie and Farah had ended up pregnant. Mary had made up so many ridiculous stories in her mind but she knew none of them were probably true. Instead she came to conclusion that they had all had sex and how and why it had happened didn't make any difference. All that mattered was that they were all pregnant – that was the one thing they all had in common.

Mary saw Ronnie in the distance walking towards the same destination as she was and she hurried up to catch up with her. Mary wanted to try her hardest to be friends with all the girls. "Hey Ronnie."

Ronnie looked over to her and sighed. "Look just because we all have to go to this same group session thing, doesn't make us friends." She had a cold tone but Mary remained her cheery.

"Oh I know, I just thought I would say hello, so hello."

"Hi."

"How has your week been?"

"Fine." Ronnie said, but Mary kept following along beside her. Ronnie found Mary to be very annoying. So she thought of a way to get rid of her. "I booked in my abortion."

Mary faltered. "Oh, you did?"

"Yeah."

"When is it?"

"Today."

Mary stopped walking to stand in the middle of the quad. "Today!" she exclaimed and Ronnie turned back to look at her with a smirk. Mary's face contorted uncomfortably but then she said; "That's – that's great."

"You don't have to lie sister-Christian, I know you don't agree with abortions, you made that pretty clear last session –"

"But it is your choice like Esther said."

"But you don't agree with it?" Ronnie egged on.

"Well no, but like she said it is your baby and it is your choice." Ronnie groaned rolling her eyes before going to walk away again. "I just feel sorry for you." Ronnie stopped and turned to face Mary.

"You feel sorry for me?" She said mockingly.

"Well you obviously feel like you have no other way out and that's why you're doing this."

"You have no idea what you're talking about," Ronnie said through gritted teeth. "You don't know anything about me."

"I know you're the girl who hangs out at the bleachers all day, wagging class and smoking and doing drugs. You don't try Ronnie, because you don't think you'll succeed so you fail anyway which is why you wont try with this baby because you've failed yourself before you've even given yourself the opportunity to succeed."
