After: Chapter Eighteen – Friends?
31 days After
Kayla, chewing on the end of her pen tried very hard not to fall asleep in English class. It wasn't that English was boring for Kayla, on the contrary, she enjoyed all her classes. She just didn't like the subject they were learning about – The Scarlet Letter. For all of those who don't know what the Scarlet Letter is, here's all Kayla knows; this girl, Hester Pryne, has an affair with the minister is besmirched and made to wear a red "A" for "adulterer". But eventually the town realises she was too harshly judged and she's really a good person and she dies a saint. "... And Kayla Moore is paired with Noah Reed." Kayla immediately snapped out of her thoughts when she heard the teacher say her name. He must have been pairing them up for their class project, which was to be a report on; you guessed it the Scarlet Letter. But then Kayla realised the person he paired her with; Noah Reed; the person who had vowed to never have anything to do with her again, which Kayla had been happy to do and she stayed out of his way. But teachers seemed to just love pairing them together whenever a group assignment came up and so of course their English teacher had done the same. But when Kayla looked back at Noah she found him glaring at her and she immediately look away. Well this is going to be fun. "Please go sit over with your partners to get to know each other." The teacher instructed. Kayla looked over to Noah again and saw he was in no position to move. Kayla sighed and got up from her seat and made her way over to him, taking the seat in front of him. But he didn't say anything and Kayla gulped at his cold expression, looking down at the desk.
"I thought we could do our report on the symbol of the –"
"Look just because we're partnered together doesn't mean I like it," he said coldly and Kayla looked up at him.
"I know you don't like me, but we –"
"I don't just not like you Kayla, I hate you." Kayla's stomach seemed to fall out of her body and fall to the ground as all the air was sucked from her lungs. Hates her. No one had ever disliked Kayla, let alone hated her.
"Why?" she managed to breathe out.
"You know why."
"Look Noah, I know I lied to you and I know I hurt you, but I don't understand why that gives you a reason to hate me."
"I don't see why it doesn't."
Kayla leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. "So you hate me because you cant have me anymore because I'm pregnant?"
"I hate you for the same reason the town hated Hester Pryne."
"And why was that?"
"Because she was a skank."
Kayla's mouth opened wide at Noah's words. "I'm not a skank!" She exclaimed.
"Well how else can you explain how you got pregnant?"
"I told you I only had sex with one person –"
"What person would want to have sex with you?" he snapped and Kayla's mouth opened a little wider this time at yet another horrible lot of words that had come from his mouth.
"Well you did like me," Kayla retorted and Noah faltered his cheeks burning red and Kayla leaned back in her chair again with a slight smirk on her face.
"Yeah because I thought you were exactly like me," Noah whispered.
Kayla titled her head to the side. "Exactly like you, how?"
"You were a nerd!" he exclaimed. "We had all the same classes together, we got paired for every project together and we were the same, you were a nerd and I was a nerd and I don't know everyone expected us to get together... even I did... but now you're..."
