After: Chapter thirty – Friendship
6 months After
Mary sat with Esther and Kayla in the ultrasound room waiting to find out the sex of both her and Kayla's baby. Ever since Jason had agreed to adopt Mary's baby, Esther had been stuck to Mary by the hip wanting to be apart of every moment. Mary didn't mind though, she was going to be her baby's adoptive mother after all. Mary waited patiently in the ultrasound seat for the doctor. Both Esther and Kayla stood beside her excitedly.
The doctor finally entered the room with her long white lab coat on. "Mary Darling and Kayla Moore?" both the girls nodded and pointed to themselves and the doctor smiled. "So two ultrasounds today, you're both pregnant?" Both the girls nodded again and the doctor smiled as she got out the gel and put it on Mary's stomach. Mary wiggled a bit under the coldness of it. But was anxious to know what the gender of her baby was going to be. The doctor put the ultrasound device on Mary's stomach, moving it around slowly and Mary looked at the screen, soon getting a clear picture of her baby. She gasped in awe like she always did whenever she had an ultrasound and Esther gasped next to her because on this ultrasound you could actually see the entire baby that was growing inside of her. "Would you like to know the sex?" Mary looked over to Esther to double check she still wanted to go through with their decision and when Esther nodded, Mary gave a nod to the doctor. There was a silence as the doctor moved the device around her stomach for a few moments. "Well it looks like..." the doctor trailed off and Esther gripped Mary's hand. "It's a boy."
Mary looked over at Esther who had a big wide smile on her face. "A boy," they both said together, smiling at each other. The doctor then printed out a photo for Mary and Esther to have before cleaning the gel off her stomach.
"Are you ready for your turn?" The doctor asked Kayla and Mary watched as Kayla nodded and the changed spots, Kayla now being on the chair and Mary sitting beside her. Mary had so much excitement running through her and she knew Kayla would feel the exact same way once she knew the gender of her baby. The doctor put gel on Kayla's stomach and for a few moments moved the ultrasound device over her stomach. The same type of picture came up on the screen as Mary's but somehow it looked different considering it was a different baby. Kayla looked up at the screen in silence just watching it move in wonder. "Would you like to know the sex?" Kayla nodded as well and the doctor moved around the curser for a few moments. Mary watched the screen inattentively. "It's a girl."
Mary snapped out of this morning's memory to realize she was sitting in the cafeteria of the school with the girls sitting around her. Ezra was sitting beside her looking at the photo of the baby Mary had gotten from the ultrasound. "I can't believe it's a boy," he kept saying in happiness looking at the photo so closely, like his eyes could bore into it. But Mary's eyes moved around the table. First to Ronnie, who was sitting there as though she was looking for someone in the crowd of people that surrounded them. Soon Kiera came out of the crowd and came to sit next to Ronnie. Ronnie had this wide smile on her face as soon as she sat down next to her. In the last few months Kiera and Ronnie had been hanging around each other a lot more and eventually Kiera started sitting with them. All the girls liked her and thought she was a great addition to their group. But Ronnie always had this odd twinkle in her eye whenever Kiera was around and Mary didn't know why, but instead of asking now, her eyes moved to Farah who was sitting on the other side of the table. She was eating her sandwich as she tried to keep to herself but Mary could notice all of the people around them that were stealing looks at her. People had been looking at Farah ever since she had come back to Grove's High a few months ago, after her miscarriage, as though people were surprised that after her miscarriage she just didn't instantly become Queen Bee again. But Mary knew Farah could never go back to her old group even if she had lost her baby. She wasn't one of them anymore and Mary knew Farah much preferred hanging around the girls then anyone else. But people still looked, even Farah's old group who probably expected the same thing; that Farah would come back after they found out she lost the baby. But she didn't. Farah had been ignoring her old group the last few months, even Liam, giving herself time to getting used to being Farah Woods again without a baby. But that didn't mean that Liam hadn't tried to talk to her. He tried whenever he could, but Farah kept telling him she needed space and now it seemed Liam was trying to give her that. Lastly Mary's eyes came to look at Kayla who was looking at someone across the cafeteria. Mary followed Kayla's gaze and saw she was staring at a boy Mary knew as Noah. Kayla had talked to Mary about her feelings for Noah and Mary had encouraged Kayla to tell him the truth. But she never had and so Mary watched Kayla for the last few months just stare at Noah from a distance like a sad puppy.
