Chapter 8: The Inventor

At the palace the day after Levy's return, exactly two days from Natsu's departure and two days before Erza's wedding:

Lucy was relieved upon Levy's return and even more happy to see that Levy has finally found love. Erza's wedding would take place in two days, and for now Levy, Gajeel, and his family would be staying in the palace. Lucy had only spent one night in her brand new apartment, with her new job, but she already loved it. The news press had accepted her application after seeing some of her writing and had assigned Lucy an article to write up. Thinking of Natsu saddened her slightly, but she knew she had to move on for now.

Lucy was busy at her new desk by the window, she looked out at a brick wall and a curtained window and sighed. She was working on her latest article for the newspaper. It was about the mysterious woman that would bring rain and pour to wherever she went. She was causing some trouble for the farmers of Fiore, but every time someone would try to approach her, they would be drenched so she was left in isolation in the eye of her own storm.

At the exact moment where Lucy was adding the finishing sentence to her article the loudest hammering noise came from the apartment in which her desk faced making her smudge the ink and causing her to have to write a whole other draft of the article. "HEY! KEEP IT DOWN WOULD YOU!" Lucy yelled at the curtained window in front of her. Suddenly the curtain was jerked back by a pale hand. The guy standing behind the curtain had navy blue spiky hair, brown eyes, pale skin and a disheveled appearance.
"I'm sorry, I was just testing out a gadget of mine," the guy told her in a voice that was cool yet kind.
"It's fine really, what are you working on over there?" Lucy asked the guy curiously.
"Oh it's something to help me approach the rain woman," he replied grinning inwardly
"Really?! I'm writing about the rain woman! What's your name?" Lucy asked letting curiosity lead her thoughts.
"Me, I'm Gray Fullbuster, an inventor and maker of items. My workshop is here in my home," Gray says.
"I'm your new neighbor Lucy, Lucy Heartfilia,"
"ARE YOU RELATED TO JUDE HEARTFILIA KING OF FAIRY TAIL?" Gray asks shocked
"umm yeah, I'm his daughter, but I'm not a  Princess, I'm just a writer. Can you show me the gadget that you created to help you meet the rain woman?"
"Sure, sure come on over here and I'll show you," Gray says. A minute later Lucy knocks on Gray's apartment door. As she enters she is immediately met with the clutter of Gray's workshop. "please excuse the mess,"
"Oh no worries, I've seen worse," Lucy catches sight of a giant board that is filled with diagrams and blueprints and images. In the center of all this clutter there is a single blurry image of a lady with curled blue hair, pale skin, and blue garments in the middle of a rain storm. "is that?..."
"Yeah that's the only known image of the rainwoman," Gray explains
"This is amazing." Lucy observes all the diagrams for a cloaking like device that shields the head and allows for a waterproof cover.
"I call it an umbrella! This invention I created is what will help me meet the rainwoman, Juvia Lockser!"
"How long have you been working on this?" Lucy is now intrigued by the inventor's goals
"I've been sketching and modeling it for months now, the real reason why I want to meet the rainwoman is because I think she could help me drive away a demon from my aunt's kingdom," Gray says deep in thought, "now all I have to do is test out the invention. Please Lucy can you help me?"
"Sure! I would be happy to help!" Lucy says
"Take this bucket of water and bring it up this ladder. After open the umbrella pour it all over the umbrella, that way I can test it!" Gray says preparing his blue umbrella. Lucy tips the bucket slowly and a thin stream of water flows down onto the canvas material of the invention. As soon as the water is all gone from the bucket Gray steps out from underneath the umbrella. "Success!" he shouts totally dry.
"Awesome that's so cool!" Lucy says in awe of this invention.

After the experiment Lucy invites Gray over for dinner and they eat together making small talk
"Hey Gray, do you wanna go with me to Princess Erza's wedding in a couple of days? Natsu hasn't visited since two days ago and I need someone to go with..."
"Sure Lucy, if it's a royal wedding that sounds cool,"
"Thanks I owe you one!" the two become trusted friends and meet each other at Lucy's house for dinner the next night too. Finally the day of the wedding approaches and all of Fairy Tail is sent in a commotion of preparation.

"Wow you look great Lucy," Lucy wears a pale
pink dress that floats down to her feet and cinches around her waist.
"You too Gray," Gray wears black pants and shirt, a white and blue jacket and brown boots.
"Ready for the occasion?"
"Let's go,"
