Chapter 6

Evening closes down calm and peaceful. I followed Shay's footsteps, skipping through branches under the cover of darkness.

The name is Laurence Washington, with a suspicious cargo.

Shay stopped in front of me, looking back serious in my eyes. "I'll find the cargo. You shall start to locate Washington. Don't mess up your first mission."

I nodded. "Don't worry." I answered in a low voice but uncertain. Things don't always go well when I feel nervous.

Shay put his hands on my shoulders. "Hey... I didn't mean to put pressure on you. Just don't risk yourself, and be careful. I'll help you out if you get into trouble. "

"You should have left me with Liam if you worry so much." I tried to play strong. He smiled and pat my shoulders.

"Alright," he said with a relief, "Then I shall proceed." I should move on, too. I pulled my hood on and glanced down.

Guards with red coats are patrolling almost everywhere, especially where the mansion stands. That must be where Washington stays.

I leaped down and hid myself in the shadows. Fighting and killing isn't my purpose, but the guards near the mansion are just too many. I hid behind a wooden warehouse and looked around. There are guards standing on the lookout that I have to take down first. But throwing knives can't reach that far. The only way to eliminate the guards above is to use a rifle.

I crawled forward in some bushes in the yard. Almost everyone equipped a rifle, so it isn't a problem to find one. I slowly approached an unlucky soldier, he didn't realize the upcoming threat. I stabbed him in the throat and pulled him down.

I hid behind a tree and started to sim. Firing a rifle won't draw too much attention as fireworks were blooming in the sky. They sound exactly like gun shots.

As soon as I killed the guards high up, I successfully reached a view point near the garden walls. It wasn't as bad as I thought before. Suddenly, I heard a crack behind me. I flicked up a throwing knife and shoot at whatever it's behind. But it dogged off.

"Hey! Hey! Calm down! It's me!" Shay waved his hands to stop me because I was going to throw out another one.

"Be careful the next time. I won't show mercy." I warned him.

"What? You mean that slow toss?" He just wouldn't admit that I almost got him. I smirked.

"Stop acting foolish. Look at this place," We both took a clearer look, "Find Laurence, and I'll help you clear the guards near you." I said.

Shay nodded. "Let's move. Nice rifle, by the way." He pointed at the gun I got earlier.

"It's a heap of trash, cabbage farmer." Sometimes he got unserious on the wrong time, but that makes the mission less intense. I made my way on top of the rooftops and tail him behind.

Guards die under my hands one by one. I know I've changed a lot, but I have no choice. Helping the Brotherhood is my only hope to return home.

At a certain point, Shay hinted me to get down and meet him. Seems like he found the target.

"Listen, we have to do this quick." He whispered, "I'll assassinate him, then we'll escape."

I watched him blend in the crowds and stabbed Laurence Washington with his blade. He fell on the ground painfully, but with an unusual relief. The guards started to attack us fierce and harsh as soon as they discovered the master's death.

"Liam! I hope that you've brought the ship around!" Shay murmured as we retreated. We managed to reach the Morrigan but his face soon clouded. There are cannons firing at his ship, damaging her, shattering pieces of wood apart from her like tear drops. I braced myself near the railing as Shay took the wheel.

"Full sail! Full sail!" Shay yelled at the crews over the rumble. There were too many of them. If we fight back, we could sink.

There were still some ships around after we left the fort. We managed to make our way out and fled. After all of these furious naval battles, we could finally travel without danger.

The sea is deep and the waves are quiet. Moonlight made the seven seas a fantasy, full of legends and full of tragedies. Voyagers should all be fascinated by her beauty, also in awe of her unpredictable power. Fortunately, the crew is blessed tonight as the Morrigan drifted slowly in her gentle waves.

Feeling exhausted after the chaos, I curled myself in a corner on the deck as the crew anchored. Liam came near and sat beside me, he looked tired too.

"Tell me Alessandra, how was your first mission?"

I rubbed my face and answered, "Not bad I suppose. It was a mess in the end though."

Shay came later and sat himself beside us. He doesn't feel right, something is wrong about him.

"Laurence Washington is dead. You look disappointed." Liam said, he could tell it from his eyes.

"The sickly way that man looked, he would have been dead in a month anyway." Shay respond, "And the two other templars got away. They're looking into the manuscript and the Box."

"Did they have the artifacts?" Liam asked further more as he wanted to learn the latest situation.

"I don't know... Perhaps... I can't be sure."

"You did what was right by the Brotherhood. We can find the objects later. Cheer up Shay, it's a rare day we can sow such chaos among templars." Shay nodded but he still looks down. I can't agree with Liam, I thought the one in chaos was us.

"Perhaps, but to hear Washington speak, it didn't sound like they'd be too put out by the loss."

"Well, that's he'd want you to think." Liam concluded. The three of us didn't talk much more about the mission, since Shay is still a bit depressed, and I'm running out of energy. Liam had already fallen asleep earlier, he will have to keep the watch later tonight.

"Alessandra, why don't you rest yourself in the captain's cabin? I'll have to stay on the deck." Shay noticed me nodding off.

"No. I shall stay where the captain stands." I smiled, "Nice rifle, by the way."

The corner of his mouth curled up, "Thanks." He said, "It's a gift from Laurence Washington."

I nodded and closed my eyes, leaning my head back. He buried his fingers in my hair and kissed my forehead.

"Rest well, my dear assassin."
