My first day of Darren High School ended with Ian telling me bye and how nice it was to meet me. I had given him one of my widest smiles when he told me this. Weight lifting was definitely going to be my favorite class.
I walked home quickly after feeling revived by Ian. He was one of the few people to not look at me strangely because of my face.
My apartment was about a half mile from the school. My family moved here to the city because of a job offer my dad received. I was more than happy to leave my previous school. The bullying had gotten out of control recently and I knew my mind would have eventually broken down. Unconsciously my right hand grabbed my left arm. Under my long sleeves I knew that many scars existed from previous depression. My parents have never known about the bullying and they have never known about my depression. I couldn't bring myself to show them how weak I had gotten by cutting myself. I was pitiful. So the move here to Darren High School was relief for me. The bullying had already started up again, but I was sure I could handle it this time.
I arrived home to the apartment building and proceeded up to the third floor. I punched in the code to get into the luxury apartment and entered quickly. Slipping off my sneakers I attempted to sneak to my room without being noticed, but my mom happened to notice me.
"Hey honey, how was your first day of school?" My mom smiled at me from her phone.
She was on the phone again, as usual. Her job required her to be in constant contact with her work. Her perfectly manicured nails matched her clean, wrinkle-less pencil skirt and blazer. Several pieces of jewelry hung off of her neck and wrists making her look like she belonged in this expensive apartment.
"It was fine." I replied and tried to walk off to my room. I failed again.
"What's on your clothes Hannah?" Her make up-filled face scrunched up at the stains.
"I accidentally spilled spaghetti on myself at lunch today..." I said nonchalantly.
"Dear you always seem to have accidents like this at school! I suppose just throw your clothes into the laundry and I'll have Sophia wash them. Also your school uniform came today. I set it on your bed." After saying this my mom went back to suddenly talking to someone on the phone.
I rolled my eyes a little and went down the hall to my room door. Suddenly, my brother emerged from his room and was heading towards the bathroom. He stopped when he noticed I was home and took a quick look at me.
"Don't tell me it's already started Hannah." Stephen said quietly so mom wouldn't hear.
Stephen had already graduated high school and he knew all about my depression and bullying issues. He found out about a year ago when he walked in on me in the bathroom. I had a kitchen knife in my right hand and blood running down my left arm. His look of shock was still etched into my mind. I never wanted to see that kind of pity or surprise come from my parents' faces. I had convinced him to never tell.
"No. Darren High is nice. I really just spilled my lunch on me today." I lied with a fake, plastered on smile.
Stephen stared at me for a few more seconds before continuing to the bathroom. I entered my room and shut the door so I could have a little privacy to change clothes. I quickly noticed the ironed school uniform set neatly on my bed. A navy pencil skirt with a white button up shirt. It was still slightly chilly as winter was wearing off so my mom had gotten me long sleeve. I silently thanked her for that. After putting away my uniform, I plopped down into my desk chair and opened my laptop. I pulled up Facebook and was shocked to see an explosion of messages.
