The big brown grizzly bear was absolutely ginormous. It looked to be over seven feet long and probably getting close to weighing a ton. It was busy lumbering around the woods with its snout to the ground, constantly smelling its surroundings.
I still stood frozen. Rue had me stuck in this same spot. She had my body at the moment, but not my mind.
As the grizzly bear began to move closer, it became clear that the massive beast would soon detect me. If it did, it would most likely attack once it caught a whiff of my wolf side.
Out of all the fear I was experiencing, I bravely shouted into my mind Let me go!
Why should I? Rue snarled back. Give yourself up to me!
Never! I thought back with an air of defiance. This is my body and my life, what gives you the right to take it from me?
The world's always been unfair, Hannah. Everyone submits to me eventually. Just wait, you will lose when you're at your weakest and least expecting it!
I wanted to almost cry at Rue's cruel words and voice, but I knew I wouldn't even get the chance to because I couldn't even move a finger.
I began to pray in my mind frantically for the bear to not notice me.
But of course, it did. The huge grizzly was about thirty feet away when it suddenly caught my scent. It's massive head swung up and its black eyes met mine.
I erupted in screams all in my head. I felt Rue getting angry at all the noise, but I kept screaming out of fear.
The bear bared its teeth and rose up on its hind legs. It completely towered over me and all I could do was stand there, frozen.
No, I thought. I can't die like this!
Snarling, the animal got back onto its four legs and started to charge. I could hear its furious gasps leave its mouth and could almost feel its growls as they vibrated out of its chest.
No! Let me go! I was drowning in fear as I saw my life play through my mind. My precious family, Dad, mom, and Stephen. My friends back at school, Ian and Kai. The way Ian made me feel when I was bullied for my looks. How Kai supported me through some of the most nightmarish times of my life.
I wasn't going down like this.
LET. ME. GO. I whispered a death sounding threat at Rue.
I felt Rue's hold on me diminish as her burning desire to completely take me over disappeared. I had put Rue back in her place!
There was no time to rejoice at my sudden ability to move again as the bear was just about on top of me.
The instinct to run out of fear had vanished when Rue had and I only felt the burning desire to defend myself. With a roar rumbling out of my throat, I leaped straight at the bear... and felt my body ripple and transform into a wolf.
I collided with the surprised grizzly and my enhanced abilities went right into work. I was about two-thirds the size of the bear, but the bear was no match for my power.
I knocked it to the ground and I felt immediate satisfaction at being able to rip into the bear's throat, ending its life before it could give a good fight. I howled triumphantly into the woods at my victory. I had put away Rue for now and succeeded in becoming a wolf!
My fur was a perfect white, just like my hair, and looked almost like fresh fallen snow. It wouldn't be ideal for hunting when it wasn't winter, but I knew my skills could make up for it.
