Chapter One
As I walked through the dressing room where every sixteen year old that lived in St. Louise's Orphanage was getting ready I couldn't help but smile. These people, though treated me very wrong looked so happy, so hopeful. And I know my face contain every bit of happiness and hopefulness as well.
I was already dressed, Dressed in the finest clothes I've ever worn all my life.
I had on simple strapless gown on, a metallic sky blue colour. It wasn't puffy on the bottom but it wasn't flat either. It was smug against my breasts and directly below there was a silver and blue belt lining. There were small diamond beads that looked like rain droplets falling below the belt. I had no necklace on, just a silver bracelet on my right wrist and a pair of dangling earrings. My makeup was done natural, with only some foundation, mascara, eyeliner and lip gloss. My hair was straightened to the end and put in a loose ponytail with a fancy silver hair band to top it off.
I normally wouldn't be able to afford such dazzling and expensive things but luckily everything was covered by the Mating Ball committee and its sponsors.
I paced around as I looked up at the clock. I still have 15 minutes before we leave.
I decided to go ahead and retouch my makeup. As I walked into my room I couldn't help but notice the pictures I had hung up. They were pictures of my parents and half siblings. I'd found all of them online, they were mostly pictures that my family had posted on their social networking profiles.
With my makeup forgotten, I began examining my family; the one that completely forgot about me.
I looked at a picture of my mom's family. Jessica Brews, stood beside her mate Chase Brews as he had his arms wrapped around her waist. My brother Jace and sister Samantha stood side by side laughing. They were fraternal twins and only two and half years younger than me. Though we were half siblings, we all shared the same striking blue eyes. I scoffed at my mom impregnated herself the minute she found her mate.
But I couldn't really blame her. I heard that the minute you find your other half that everything disappears, nothing feels more important and your undivided attention and thoughts go towards them.
My scoff slowly turned to a soft smile as I looked at the picture with one last glance, before moving onto my father's family.
Andrew Collins, he too had his arms wrapped around his mate, Elizabeth's waist but had his head on her shoulder, looking at her as if the world revolved around her. And I'm sure his world did. In front of them were Ella, Daniel and Sasha. Ella was the oldest, only three years younger than me, right behind her was Daniel who would be turning twelve tomorrow and Sasha who turned five a little less than two months ago. We all shared the same dark brown hair.
As I looked at the pictures, I couldn't help but feel like a stalker. But I didn't have any other option. If you lived a life where you knew that your family was out there, you would try your hardest to get to know them. In my unfortunate case, I couldn't even get to know them properly; there's a reason why my parents left me behind. I would only cause trouble, pain. I was just a burden.
I could feel tears pricking my eyes, but I didn't allow them to fall. I promised myself I would never cry, that I would always stay strong. I promised myself that instead of cussing at what fate took away from me, I would appreciate what I had and what I could gain.
"Let's go, the cars are here it's time to go" I heard someone holler from down the hall.
That sentence, thankfully, brought a smile on my face.
Finally, it's time for my life to change.
•-•-•-•-•
I've been here for around two hours and so far I've danced with exactly twenty three guys; nineteen of them being wolves and four of them human.
But none the less, I haven't found my mate yet. I wasn't werewolf so I couldn't scent him out; however I was literally touching and looking every guy in the eyes in hope to find him.
I sighed and went over to the punch bowl for a drink. Reaching the table, everything went quiet expect for numerous hushed whispers. Looking over my shoulder I notice that there was a crowd around the main entrance.
I wonder what's going on. I thought to myself.
I looked over to my right to see a girl about a year or two older than me. I softly tapped her shoulder gaining her attention.
"Hi, I was wondering if you had any idea what's going on there" I asked pointing towards the crowd.
"First time here?" She asked. I nodded my head.
"Well, it seems as Alpha Grey has finally made his entrance like he does every year."
"Alpha Grey?"
"Yep, Alpha Thane Grey, the 20 year old hot alpha, he was 16 when he became Alpha; youngest one to receive the alpha position. He's known to be cruel and ruthless and only cares of the wellbeing and safety of his pack. I actually pity his mate. Whenever he comes here, he's never really looked. Rumour has it he doesn't want a mate."
"Well he must be caring inside if he protects his pack like he does, maybe he'll be the same with his mate." I don't know why but I felt like I needed to defend him.
"Doubt it, other than being famous for his cruel and ruthless ways he's also famous for his player ways. Many of the girls that have been with him say that he never kisses them, only does the deed and kicks the girl out." She scoffed, I wondered if she had a past with him too.
"Wow" was all I could manage to say. I hoped that when he did find his mate he would give up his player ways for her. And prayed that none of the girls he's been with turn out pregnant; I knew very well how the child's life would turn out...like mine.
I guess I was so engrossed into my thoughts that when I looked back over at the girl she seemed to be bowing her head. Confused, I looked in front of me, and was face to face with most likely the most handsome man I've ever seen. He would be what I called eye candy or a Greek god. I locked eyes with him and everything disappeared. It was like we were the only two people in the room.
"Mate" He whispered in a husky voice, a voice was that seemed too good to be true. I always wondered how someone's voice could turn you on; well I do now.
