The room
I woke up feeling slightly claustrophobic under a heavy arm, I tried wiggle my way out, but the arm just snaked around my waist to pull me closer to its owner warm body. I wasn’t about to open my eyes just yet, but gave up for a while and cuddled with it, wishfully thinking it would last just a little bit longer.
A flash of bright light made me snuggle my face in his warm chest, hiding away from the light as a ferocious growl erupted from his chest sending shivers down my spine. Maybe, I’m catching a flu
Another flash, finally made me snap from my sleep to punch the offending object, followed by a curse. I felt my lips curl in a smirk, knowing full well that annoying voice. I cracked open an eye to see him holding his nose.
-Esther, was that really necessary?-scowled Jess in a nasal voice.
-Aren’t you supposed to be on your way to the next port, to finish the tour to be left free to roam around for the rest of the day?-I asked groggily, still being held against his chest, I poked Cain’s frame with my foot, he had fallen asleep in an impromptu bed made out off his own covers, and was peacefully sleeping holding a large pillow.
-Naahh, I told the teacher we all had gotten bedridden with some nasty bug from eating something in our breakfast so that he wouldn’t dare coming on us puking our guts out-He said proudly puffing his chest for being smart, if the word fit.
-Then what the hell were you doing taking pictures of us, so early in the morning?-I asked feeling myself tense in anger.
-You really are not a morning person, uh? As I was saying…-he continue blabbing some nonsense about the town being too superstitious for its wellbeing and how he had gone in cover and tried to find anything about the convent owners, that’s were my ears perked. It seemed, that the convent had being passed down generations in a mysterious family, that kept sponsoring the little town. The town itself seemed to be run by this family, under the shadows, never letting on who they were. Their privacy seemed to be always a priority when giving donations and so. No public attendance for them.
I rubbed my face tiredly, wishing for a mug of coffee yet the warm arm still seemed to cozy to let go. I noticed his breathing quickening and soon his silver eyes were opening, slightly dazed
“I thought you were a fragment of my mind, you are real” said a voice inside my head as his face showed surprise and relief and finally started tearing like a lost child, he buried his face in my shoulder; and my arms reached instictly to hold him while he sobbed silently.
I closed my eyes trying to control my rage, until his words or more like his thoughts registered. He hadn’t spoken a word o me, he had somehow just let me know what he felt, with his mind…What the…
I knew that a normal person would have started screaming like a nut banshee, but I couldn’t . It seemed way too natural, him speaking in my brain. After all I had already seen his fluffy ears, and knew he wasn’t exactly normal.
Speaking of which, his fluffy ears sprouted again and soon enough his sobbing quieted. I looked up to see Cain’s eyes trying to process the scene and Jess sitting on the floor with his poker face in place.
-Care to explain?- Asked Cain.
-I’m trying to process it myself. I didn’t tell you anything about the ears, cause you might have not believed until you saw it for yourself, his healing is equally fast, only thing that diminishes it, is silver. How do I know? They incrusted silver shards in the gaps left by a whip until they started shedding oxide….How is he alive, don’t know. I hate them.
He sighed deeply in his sleep, I still didn’t know his name but It felt he knew me more than he was letting on, and some forgotten part of my brain was nagging me to let it go. I left his embrace to let him rest a bit more.
-Here, breakfast-Chirped Jess taking a white lunch box next to him.
I raised an eyebrow, and he shrugged letting me know he had already had his fill.
-How long do you think he was…there?-asked Cain, meaning the convent’s underground.
-I don’t know, all I know is that if I ever get to meet the authors of his misery, it won’t be pretty…-I said quietly enough for them to hear me as my fingers played with locks of his raven dark hair, his ears had were still that curiously a contrast to his hair, being white, I scratched softly behind his ear, the feeling was too odd to be described.
-Are they as soft as they look?-Asked Jess, scratching his neck with a curious glint in his eyes.
-Do you think he will grow up a tail?-Asked Cain, befuddled.
-Guy…We need to plan…How the hell are we gonna get him out of the country with none noticing, especially in this town, apparently is run by the owner of the convent, and I’m not risking it!-I hissed in whispers, I heard a soft whimper coming from the boy when my hand stopped so I kept administrating the strokes in his ear.
-You sure know how to stress a guy…-commented lightly Jess trying to lighten the mood.
-What about your dad?-Asked Cain, I raised an eyebrow not really seeing how my father though famous in the wild photography business, would help.-Remember you mentioned how he made a friend here in Scotland.
-Mr. McCallahan?-I asked remembering the pictures my father had taken of the old man when confusing him with his bear size and after that becoming friends, my father was not conventional, so it would actually be bizarre if his friend were in anyway anything but normal. I widened my eyes in surprise, he had mentioned living around the area, in a more secluded area, a luxury he could afford being quite wealthy himself.
-Hey, I do use my brain from time to time-glared annoyed Cain to my surprise, stressing the “do use”
-Sorry, not really used to you using your brain-I said yawning-I'll call my dad and see what can I bargain to get this boy out of the country...
