J.S.D. in L.A. wrote in and said

"Dear Ven, I am a mother of 2 and I've been with my man for six years. We've been married for three years. I recently made the choice to learn Spanish since my husband is bi-lingual. There have been times where I've been left out of my own conversations. His brother will sometimes join our conversations and say some things in Spanish when they can say it in English. Am I overreacting or his he the one trying it.

Dear J.S.D.

*Smacks lips*  Boo he is trying you, honestly I would mention it to your man and talk about it. communication is key. IF you know his brother is going to a family function do not go to the family function. Or you can call the brother out on it, cause that is disrespectful to  cut a person out of their own conversation.

For all you know he could be talking about you and you don't even know it.

Since they knew that you didn't speak Spanish at the time before you decided to learn the language, they are trying you. Congrats on making a decision to help your marriage and teach yourself something new!

Anyone who doesn't understand why this is offensive I'm gonna break it down for you right now.

You're just chatting with your man and one of his relatives joins the conversation and the language shifts from English to Spanish (In which she is unable to understand) therefore cutting her out of her own conversation with her man. That is disrespectful, especially since his brother knows that she doesn't understand Spanish. It's the same way in reverse. If the two brothers were having a conversation in Spanish and say the brother didn't learn English. It would be same thing if she started talking to her man and butting in to their conversation and the brother would feel uncomfortable because he just got cut out of his own conversation.

JSD, honey all I have to say is communicate with your man or call the brother out on his bs because that's not acceptable. Either that or just avoid the possible hater.

I was with someone a few years back and I was in the same position you're in now. All I did was tell my man

"Sweetie, could you please speak English around me so I know what's going on, at least until I learn Spanish myself?" I honestly didn't think that was too much to ask for.

The relationship didn't last too long after that because his father is a racist. (He's openly admitted it that he hates white people so don't tell me i'm ignorant haha. Because of how his family felt about me I had to end things with him because it was affecting my self esteem and it was not good for me to stick around, but that's not what made me walk out the door, it was the fact that he didn't defend me when he should have. Did I ever learn Spanish? A little bit, but nowhere near enough.

Good luck JSD I hope everything works out for you, and I hope I helped cause I know that people Try our last nerves on a daily basis.

Next One.

Dear Ven, I'm a 21 year old college student that's really trying to focus on my education. I live at home. I refuse to get a job because the minimum wages are not enough to live off of. Don't get me wrong I think it's a good thing to earn a living, but I'm not gonna do a "Crap job" when i'm not being paid enough to live off of. It's completely unrealistic to expect me to do something I take no joy in doing without being paid enough for it.
