Chapter 4The sun shining through my curtains was bright; causing me to slowly wake up. My hooded eyes scan my bed, and I find my dog, Ace, sleeping at the edge. I smile and pet him softly, not wanting to disturb him from his sleep. Then I slowly lift myself off of my bed and let out a yawn.
I make my way into my small kitchen and start brewing some coffee, while grabbing the remote and turning on the news. I see that our story from yesterday was on; showing Aviree getting arrested and getting put in the back of a police car. I still can't believe she was actually arrested with out any really good evidence. Whatever, I guess, I'm not the boss.
I then start making myself some toast, still listening to the news. While the toast is cooking, I pour a new bowl of dog food for Ace. As he starts to eat, my phone rings - it's the station calling. I press the green answer button.
"Yes?"
"Hughes? It's Detective Brine. Come down to the station as soon as you can. I need to ask you and Madison a favor."
"Is Madison already there?" As I speak, I jog into my bedroom and start shrugging on some black jeans with my phone smushed inbetween my shoulder and ear.
"Yes. Now get here quick." Then the line goes dead.
As I start getting ready, my mind wanders off and starts thinking of what Brine needs me for. He's never really asked me for anything; he always asks the others since they're more experienced and older than me. I am only twenty-six and i've been working as a Detective for about two years. Also, the Khloe Harman murder is only my third case, so it's actually kind of a big deal to me. Every case I have of course is.
Once I am done getting ready, I pet Ace a goodbye and grab my purse and coat before walking out the door.
As I arrive at the parking garage of my apartment building, I start feeling a little anxious. What if Brine decides to fire me? What if he thinks I did a bad job at gathering information yesterday and is going to yell at me? This is the first real job I've ever had, so I get nervous so easily about everything and I always think the worst of things. I should really, really stop that.
Once I arrive at the station, I hop out of my car and rush into the building. As soon as I walk in, Madison walks up to me and starts guiding me to Brine's office.
"Do you know what this is about?" I ask, taking my long coat off and folding it over my forearm. She shakes her head no.
"No, I was honestly hoping you did. I'm kind of nervous. Do you think it's because we did something wrong?" Madison is only two years older than me, making us both the youngest people working at this station. Everyone else is literally in there forty's or fifty's.
Once we get to Detective Brine's office, he immediately immerges out, and gives us a big smile. I furrow my eyebrows, and out of the corner of my eye I see Madison do it, too. I don't think I've ever seen him smile.
"Good morning, ladies. Come on in," He says, and my stomach drops. I've never been inside his office. I've actually always felt like he only lets his favorite employee's inside. Which was never me.
Brine gestures for us to sit down in the two leather chairs in front of his desk. He then proceeds to sit down in his own chair, sitting across from both of us now. He folds his hands together before getting serious. And what comes out of his mouth surprised me.
"Detectives, I need both of you to go undercover at London University."
My mouth almost falls open, and my heart fills with both fear and excitement. Does this mean we're getting upgraded? Only the older detectives get to go undercover. I can't help but to say,"Are you kidding?"
